Safety Group/Coordinator

Serious adverse events that are seen in clinical trials and in the general use of marketed products need to be reported directly to a safety group or safety coordinator. Safety groups tend to operate and maintain their own databases for these SAE reports, or cases, because of the detailed information related to each case that they must collect (Prokscha, 2007). Each SAE case is initially entered in this system and then updated as follow-up information becomes available. 

The Center for Chemical Process Safety (CCPS), a directorate of AIChE, was established in 1985 to develop and disseminate technical information for use in the prevention of major chemical accidents. The CCPS is supported by a diverse group of industrial sponsors in the chemical process industry and related industries who provide the necessary funding and professional guidance for its projects. The CCPS Technical Steering Committee and the technical subcommittees oversee individual projects selected by CCPS. Professional representatives of the sponsoring companies staff the subcommittees, with a member of the CCPS staff coordinating the activities of the sub-committee. 

ANSI is a federation of over 1,000 national trade, technical, professional, labor, and consumer organizations, governmental agencies, and individual companies. It coordinates the standards development efforts of these groups and implements national standards when they are approved. Among other publications, it publishes documents on health and safety. 

The agreement requires producers for the establishment to control all elements of production to prevent drug residues. In implementing this strategy, FSIS has worked with constituent groups to encourage adoption of producer-driven voluntary food safety initiatives and to coordinate efforts to identify animal production practices that have the potential to eliminate drug residues in edible animal products.

Herberg (1993) reported a study that assessed the effects on safety of combining kava with ethanol. This was a double blind, placebo-controlled randomized trial of 40 healthy volunteers (ten males and ten females in each group), aged between 18 and 60 years (mean=4l years). The aim of the study was to test the adverse effects on seven safety-related performance variables when adult volunteers combine kava with acute intake of ethanol at a blood alcohol concentration of 0.05%. The battery of performance tests measured vigilance, coordination, reaction time, and concentration. One group received the kava extract WS 1490 alone, and the other group received the kava extract... 

When a decision is made to pilot a process, the Pilot Plant Director schedules the review sequence and notifies the R D Chemist who provides a process summary to individual members of the Hazard Review Team. The Safety Officer will then examine the process for the presence of possible toxic or irritating compounds while the Environmental Coordinator decides the ultimate fate of any process waste streams. The Hazard Evaluation Chemist identifies any thermal or reactive hazards associated with the process. If a hazard is identified, the Process Engineer determines the suitability of a particular reactor grouping to handle the specific conditions involved. 

Procedures/responsibilities Jan Petersson is named as the Vice-President of Corporate Safety, Health and Environment, and heads a group which draws on expertise from Perstorp Support AB. The overriding responsibility for S.H.E. matters rests with the board of directors and president of the subgroup concerned. Each production unit has a SHE coordinator and most companies have a SHE manager as well.
