Safety coordinator

The company should have a safety coordinator. In smaller companies it may be on a part-time basis. 

Serious adverse events that are seen in clinical trials and in the general use of marketed products need to be reported directly to a safety group or safety coordinator. Safety groups tend to operate and maintain their own databases for these SAE reports, or cases, because of the detailed information related to each case that they must collect (Prokscha, 2007). Each SAE case is initially entered in this system and then updated as follow-up information becomes available. 

Disposal. Acetone and alcohol can be saved for future cleaning, or recovered by distillation. None of the halogenated hydrocarbons should ever be poured down the sink. If poured on a rag to wipe a stopcock, you may be able to leave the rag in a fume hood to dry before disposing of the rag. However, such a rag may classify as a toxic waste and may require special handling and disposal. There are many laws that govern the disposal of organic solvents, so check with the safety coordinator where you work for specific information.

I have asked I.O.N.S. s own safety coordinator, Ben Whell, to record his thoughts on this project and to tell us how to proceed. First, regarding safety, the I.O.N.S. safety manual is included herein. We are very proud of the fact that only minor safety violations have occurred since our company was founded in 1978. We expect that all safety policies and procedures outlined in the manual will be in effect at all times. For this reason, it is imperative that you diligently study and familiarize yourself with the material contained in this manual. Before you are permitted to do any laboratory work, you must satisfactorily demonstrate your knowledge of safety to your supervisor. He or she will go over the safety manual with you and point out important aspects of your specific workspace. In addition, Ben Whell, the I.O.N.S. Safety Coordinator, provides a safety report for all projects that require special attention with respect to safety. 

The simplest means for maintaining the codes Is to keep a notebook listing all of the health end safety ratings and the personal protective equipment requirements. This could be the responsibility of the health and safety coordinator, the plant manager, the chief safety and health officer, or the department responsible for health and safety. In setting up such a notebook, we would recommend including the headings shown below.

Safety coordinators are the catalysts in the safety system and should function as such. Safety coordinators should not be in a line function, but rather in an advisory capacity in a staff function. In many successful companies the safety director is on an executive level and reports directly to the CEO.

These meetings will be scheduled in advance to ensure attendance is given priority and will be arranged by the safety coordinators.
