By 1911 the tonnage of domestic petroleum asphalts exceeded the importations of Trinidad and Bermudez asphalts. Starting about 1920, and coincident with the rapid expansion in rural road building, the production of petroleum asphalt has rapidly increased, as shown by Figure 1, so that it exceeded 9,000,000 tons in 1949. The ratio of petroleum to native and rock asphalt production in 1949 was approximately 8 to 1 (186). [Pg.264]

The postwar European people s car also became a mark of national identity. The small cars of the 1950s had some features in common but they were all distinctive and created for the roads that had to carry them, such as the efficient autobahns of Germany or less developed rural roads of France. Few cars moved across national borders in these years. A number of low-priced bubble cars appeared but many of these were less than stable. [Pg.85]

Urban population Urban roads will have more accidents and fewer fatalities or severity per kilometre travelled than rural roads, because of the density of vehicles and the lower speeds of travel. Hakkert and Braimaister (2002) have shown in one macro-study that countries with a high level of urbanisation will have higher population densities and they may experience lower levels of fatalities and serious injuries. Page (2001) has found that the population who hve in urban areas have fewer road accident fatalities than other places. Bester (2001) also reported similar results that countries with higher road densities will have fewer fatality rates. Shorter distances to medical services can explain this. [Pg.18]

Just over half of road accident fatalities in Great Britain occur on rural roads. [Pg.42]

The greatest benefits in terms of accident reductions are from grade-separated junctions (57%), rural road realignment (42%), and rural bypasses (32%). [Pg.43]

A significant correlation exists between accidents and traffic flow, link length and farm accesses on single-carriageway rural roads. [Pg.44]

Evidence suggests that there may be a 7% increase in accidents for each additional access point per mile on rural roads. [Pg.44]

There is an established relationship between vehicle speeds and accidents on rural roads, driving too fast for the conditions is more likely to be a factor in accidents than exceeding the speed limit. [Pg.65]

Blanket speed restrictions can work in urban areas but techniques targeted at specific roads are more likely to reduce accidents on rural roads. [Pg.73]

Injury accidents have fallen by 20% on rural roads in Suffolk following the introduction of 30 mph speed limits. [Pg.74]

You are an administration member at a medium-sized school district responsible for the district pupil transportation program. The bus transportation coordinator calls to report a collision involving a district school bus and a passenger vehicle. Three students are treated for injuries and released, whereas the driver of the passenger vehicle sustains serious injuries including fractures. The onboard camera was in operation because the bus was being used to transport students home from afterschool activities without a bus monitor. The bus was hit at 5 45 p.m. on a rural road with a 6-foot shoulder while stopped. [Pg.240]
