The dimensions of both vertical and horizontal separators are based on rules designed to provide adequate liquid holdup and vapor disengaging space. For instance, the desired vapor space in a vertical separator is at least 1 times the diameter, with 6 inches as the minimum above the top of the inlet nozzle. In addition, a 6-inch minimum is required between the maximum liquid level and the bottom of the inlet nozzle. For a horizontal separator, the minimum vapor space is equal to 20 percent of the diameter or 12 inches. 

The first rule designates a set of basic symbols (Table I). All molecules are represented as hydrogen-suppressed, and single bonds are assumed by default. For example, CO assumes a single bond between the carbon and oxygen, and C-0 indicates a double bond. The bond between two lowercase symbols is aromatic. 

Nevertheless, in the family policy area, reforms that pertain to the dynamics of activation have been implemented in the last years, albeit of limited scope. Apart from the modification of API s disregard rules already mentioned (see Sect. 3), the reform mainly entailed new calculation rules designed to smooth out the discrepancies of benefit amounts for housing benefits recipients, whether they were on minimum income benefits or employed.

In the United States, the EPA s efforts to control ozone concentrations in our ground-level air have had some success. In 2004 the EPA reported that, thanks to their emission control programs, ozone levels had continuously decreased during the period 1980—2003. The result was the lowest national ozone level since 1980, making 2003 one of the cleanest years on record. However, concerns about the prospect that the downward trend in ozone levels may be slowing, caused regulators to propose additional national rules designed to decrease vehicle exhaust and industrial emissions. 

Unfortunately there is no single set of rules designating which tests are to be conducted in order to manufacture a part repeatedly with zero defects. The tests depend on the required performance. For example, if a part is to operate where any type of failure could be catastrophic to life, then extensive and usually expensive testing is necessary. This chapter has been prepared to make processors aware of some of the different tests that are available. How deeply one gets involved depends on the performance requirements. If all that is required is to weigh the part, that is all that one does.

The rule designers could be more aggressive. The rules could interpret the sales order, identifying the need for more material. The rules could then print purchase orders and direct them electronically to suppliers. Then the rules could notify the sales forecasting group to review their planning assumptions. Finally, flnance might order the system to recast income statements and balance sheets to reflect the order, notify the bank of a need for more credit, and print supplier checks.
