Rose geranium

The esters belonging to the geraniol series of alcohols are absolutely indispensable in the manufacture of artificial perfumes. When it is remembered that these esters are present in such oils as bergamot, rose, geranium, lavender, petit-grain, neroli, and numerous other sweetsmelling essential oils, it will readily be seen how useful they are in building up similar perfumes artificially. 

To 10 c.c. of the oil (otto of rose or rose-geranium oil) 10 c.c. of formic acid 100 per cent, (specific gravity 1 22) is added, and the mixture gently boiled under a reflux condenser for one hour. The mixture is cooled, 100 c.c. of water added, and the whole transferred to a separator. The aqueous layer is rejected, and the oil washed with successive quantities of water as in the acetylation process. The formylated oil is dried with anhydrous sodium sulphate, and about 2 grams neutralised and saponified with alcoholic potash in the usual manner. The simpler group in constitution is that of the olefine terpenes. This group is represented by terpenes obtained from the ethereal oils of lemon, orange, rose, geranium, etc., and from india rubber or caoutchouc. 

The extraction process used depends on the plant. For instance, lemon or lime, orange, grape fruit, and bergamot are usually expressed because the oils are present in the peels and the oils are released when the peel is ruptured. Others, that include lavender, clary sage, chamomile, and rose geranium, are usually distilled. Some flowers, like rose, for example, are distilled and solvent extracted, resulting in either a rose absolute or rose Otto. 

Rose oxide is used in rose, geranium and all other floral fragrances. Its outstanding stability makes it suitable for use in perfume compositions for nearly all applications.
