Diuron was introduced by du Pont in 1954 (Fig. 3). It is one of a series of substituted urea herbicides. Diuron is applied preemergence to crops such as cotton, alfalfa, grapes, fruit and nut crops. Foliar activity is enhanced when a surfactant is added to the spray.

The Hesperidium is a large thick-skinned succulent fruit with seeds embedded in the pulp but from a superior ovary. Examples Orange, Grape-fruit, Lemon, etc. In each of these there is to be noted a glandular leathery epicarp, a sub-leathery mesocarp and an endocarp in the form of separate carpels. From the endocarp hairs grow inward into the carpellary cavities and become filled with succulence. The seeds lie amid the hair cells. Fig. 102 (3). 

Hesperid ium.—A large thick-skinned succulent fruit like the orange, lemon or grape-fruit.

The extraction process used depends on the plant. For instance, lemon or lime, orange, grape fruit, and bergamot are usually expressed because the oils are present in the peels and the oils are released when the peel is ruptured. Others, that include lavender, clary sage, chamomile, and rose geranium, are usually distilled. Some flowers, like rose, for example, are distilled and solvent extracted, resulting in either a rose absolute or rose Otto. 

The results from the GPC and the size exclusion chromatography studies together with a number of intrinsic viscosities that were measured in our laboratories have clearly demonstrated that on a constant and consistent basis citrus pectins derived only from lime peels have a molecular weight superior to citrus pectins of normal mixed peel origin. A citrus pectin of mixed peel origin can consist of any proportion of peels from orange, grape fruit, lemon, and lime.
