The cone shaped charge has excellent possibilities for sabotage, especially for use against industrial machinery. The 3.5 rocket itself provides one of the very best shaped charges. A later section on this versatile weapon will describe and illustrate how the rocket head can be removed and used as a placed shaped charge. [Pg.33]

It was used in anti-aircraft fire (Ref 9, p 55) 5-inch Incendiary Rocket, used at ranges of about 5,000 yds, was an effective weapon when fired from landing craft in amphibious operations. The rocket head was loaded with thermite or oil incendiary mixtures... [Pg.342]

Smoke shells and rockets are used to produce smoke clouds for military signaling and, in daylight fireworks, for ornamental effects. The shell case or rocket head is filled with a fine powder of the desired color, which powdered material need not necessarily be one which will tolerate heat, and this is dispersed in the form of a colored cloud by the explosion of a small bag of gunpowder placed as near to its center as may be. Artificial vermilion (red), ultramarine (blue), Paris green, chrome yellow, chalk, and ivory black are among the materials which have been used, but almost any material which has a bright color when powdered and which does not cake together may be employed. [Pg.122]

Since the propellant, which is one of several black powder type formulations (Formula 112), is tightly rammed or more frequently hydraulically pressed, it burns in a progressive, orderly fashion—faster at first, because of the large surface area caused by the long tapered hole and then linearly towards the end plug. It is desirable that the ignition in the rocket head take place exactly at the apex of flight, but this can be difficult in commercial manufacture. [Pg.139]

The development of incendiary rockets for the Army proceeded slowly until the autumn of 1944, because none of the theaters or branches of the armed services set up a military requirement for the munition. Then a joint Army-Navy testing and experimental board asked for one hundred 7.2-inch incendiary rockets for trial. This became a joint project of the Ordnance Department and CWS, with the latter filling the rocket with incendiary fuel and fitting it for bursting and ignition. The rocket head held about twenty pounds of PT fuel, a quantity shown by test to be adequate for starting fires. This rocket was never standardized, but the CWS would have considered it satisfactory for use as a standard munition if the need for such a rocket had arisen. ... [Pg.195]
