The MARS nuclear power plant (NPP) is being developed as part of an innovative nuclear energy system considered by experts of the Russian Research Centre Kurchatov Institute for the future large-scale deployment of small reactors. The system includes the operating small nuclear power plants and the complete infrastructure chain supporting their deployment, operation, transportation, repair, maintenance, refuelling and decommissioning.

The difficulties of such operations on the research platform Nordsee are described in Ref. 9. The Murchison platform was provided with a combination of impressed current protection and galvanic anodes because there was a limit to the load to be transported [12]. The anodes for platforms are installed and provided with cables at the yard. They are installed with redundancy and excess capacity so that no repairs are necessary if there is a breakdown. The lower part of the platform up to the splash zone is usually placed in position in the designated location at least 1 year before the erection of the deck structure so that impressed current protection cannot initially be put in operation. This requires cathodic protection with galvanic anodes for this period. This also means that the impressed current protection is more expensive than the galvanic anodes.

Some customers complained that there was oxygen in the ammonia. It was found that the road transport maintenance department was preparing tanks for repair by w ashing them out with water and then returning them... 

A low speed EMS maglev system was constructed in Birmingham in 1984. This design had an air gap of 10 mm and used short stator LIM propulsion with power delivered to the vehicle via sliding contacts and a third rail. It provided transportation between an airport and a train station and worked nearly flawlessly for more than twelve years. When problems did develop there was no one with interest and ability to repair it, so it was removed. 

Unless the precautions given in the previous two examples are taken, some employees could be injured or killed. Even if this did not occur the financial loss could be large, since if critical pieces of equipment were damaged it might take months before they could be repaired or replaced and before production could be resumed. For each day the plant does not run a number of expenses continue (salaries, depreciation, taxes, insurance). There is also the problem of supplying customers. If a customer goes to another supplier it may be difficult to lure him back. As a result, the company may furnish him with product made at a distant plant and not charge him the extra transportation expenses, or may buy a competitor s product and sell it to the customer at less than the purchase price.

At 1 p.m. the plant operator notices a drop in pressure in a pipeline transporting benzene. The pressure is immediately restored to 100 psig. At 2 30 p.m. a 1/4-in-diameter leak is found in the pipeline and immediately repaired. Estimate the total amount of benzene spilled. The specific gravity of benzene is 0.8794.
