For one, many techniques in this book are entire fields in and of themselves with their own dedicated texts and tomes. For another, they come from the opposing domains of right-brain creativity and left-brain analytics. As shown in recent studies, the dominance of either the right or left side of the brain allows each of us to process information and learn differently. In general, each of us tends to have one side of the brain which dominates the way we think, understand, and act. Most technical persons are left-brain dominant, which typically means structured and logical thinking. Left brainers are often more sequential. Most computer experts and engineers tend to be left-brain dominant. However, right-brain dominance is often described as broader vision, seeing the big picture, more conceptual, and more holistic. [Pg.239]

The above process must be balanced with periods of inactivity so that both the conscious and subconscious sides of the human brain will contribute to the final solution. The inquiry should also be infused with a poetic language and the use of metaphors that will stimulate human creativity and provide the necessary sfumato (see Section 2.4.4). As we give time to the logical investigation of solutions to our career problem, we must also let our right brain, or unconscious mind, simply sit with it for a while. Creative problems are often eventually solved by allowing all the information we have gathered to soak in to our reality. [Pg.31]

A mind map is a visual representation of a body of knowledge related to a specific central concept. It is designed to show all related concepts and their relationships in a nonlinear way, with the main concept centrally positioned and secondary concepts surrounding it. A mind map should be produced using pictures, words, colors, and differentiated line thicknesses and fonts, but there are no formal rules on how to actually create one. With practice, however, your artistic richness and sophistication usually gradually improves. A mind map should be drawn by hand if possible so as to increase its spontaneous nature and to maximize the involvement of the right brain hemisphere. In Fig. 3, there are assigned symbols and numbers in each EEG signal, which indicate the electrode site in the electrode cap. These symbols and numbers follow the 10-20 international systems, where the symbols indicate the brain area and the numbers reflect whether the induced EEG signals are in the left or the right brain hemisphere. More recent research finds that different parts of the brain do have different roles. It also shows that the organization of thinking is not as simple as suggested by the lef-brain, right-brain theory. Both sides of the brain work together for many thinking functions. [Pg.457]

An effective but much less widely used treatment for depression is electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), which leaves patients with few permanent side effects. Patients receive about four to ten treatments over a two-week period. Confusion and memory loss are minimized by the common practice of applying the electric stimulus to only the nondominant brain hemisphere, usually the right-brain hemisphere.
