The left hemisphere of the brain identifies the specific components that make up a whole. In the case of a forest the trees, leaves, squirrels, acorns, etc. The left brain really can t see the forest for the trees ...

For one, many techniques in this book are entire fields in and of themselves with their own dedicated texts and tomes. For another, they come from the opposing domains of right-brain creativity and left-brain analytics. Yet symbiotically, even paradoxically, techniques from both of these domains are needed to enable the innovation process and achieve organic growth on any scale.

In each section, include a blend of supporting materials. People whose left brains are dominant tend to smother an audience with data, and those whose right brains are dominant rely much more on personal stories and examples. In fact, each type of supporting material has its place. There are times to be factual, times to be allegorical, times to give examples, and times to tell personal stories. Try to balance your use of the different materials. Consider also what visual aids might fit in each section. (Visual aids are discussed in more detail later in the chapter.)...

It s a bit more left-brained, but it shouldn t limit your passion and is designed to challenge and expand your current expectations. 

There has been a tendency over the years to keep separate the liberal arts and engineering curriculum, recognizing the differences in thought processes, students, and interests. This has enabled the students to follow different paths, and over time, we have found that rarely do the two meet. The separation has had different labels to describe the different path of each right brain vs. left brain, feelers vs. thinkers, creative vs. structured, liberal arts vs. engineering and technical degrees, etc. 

As shown in recent studies, the dominance of either the right or left side of the brain allows each of us to process information and learn differently. In general, each of us tends to have one side of the brain which dominates the way we think, understand, and act. Most technical persons are left-brain dominant, which typically means structured and logical thinking. Left brainers are often more sequential. Most computer experts and engineers tend to be left-brain dominant. However, right-brain dominance is often described as broader vision, seeing the big picture, more conceptual, and more holistic.

In Fig. 3, there are assigned symbols and numbers in each EEG signal, which indicate the electrode site in the electrode cap. These symbols and numbers follow the 10-20 international systems, where the symbols indicate the brain area and the numbers reflect whether the induced EEG signals are in the left or the right brain hemisphere. For example, the symbol F is located in the frontal lobe of the brain area, the odd numbers (1, 3, 5, 7) are located in the left brain hemisphere, and the even numbers (2, 4, 6, 8) are located in the right brain hemisphere.

With respect to the last item, most of us typically rely on left-brain thinking which is verbal, analytic, symbolic, abstract, temporal, rational, digital, logical, and linear (Edwards 1999, Walesh 201 la). For example, the left side of our brain likes to think Step 1, Step 2, Step 3, etc. Left-brain thinking is powerful. However, we have another kind of mental ability and it is draws on the brain s right hemisphere.
