Major qualifying project

The three major qualifying projects best reflected the new educational philosophy. The sufficiency project demonstrated a student s familiarity with several related areas within the arts and humanities and the successful development of an integrating theme as expressed in a major paper, performance, or creative output. This early appreciation for the importance of right brain development in the education of engineers and scientists reflected the notion of the technological humanist, and resulted in a rich production of remarkably creative works. 

The final project, typically completed in the senior year, was the major qualifying project (MQP). As the name suggested, this project was a significant research or design project in the major field of study, and was often undertaken in the facilities of an industrial sponsor. 

Some students complete their humanities and arts requirement at a project center, most frequently in the sophomore year and often in London in association with its Dickens Museum. The majority of participants, however, are completing their Interactive Qualifying Project, or IQP, in their junior year, while a smaller number (including some who have already been to project centers completing their earlier projects) complete their Major Qualifying Project (MQP) at a project center as seniors. All told, about half of all WPI undergraduates complete one or more of their required projects at the international project centers. 

Many engineers appreciate that painting, which should be a minor part of an engineering project, can assume major proportions if there are problems or premature failures. For any painting work for which premature failure is economically or practically unacceptable, it is advisable to use full-time, qualified paint inspection. Note that part-time inspection, or visit inspection, can in some ways be worse than no inspection at all. 

The general contractor approach gives the responsibility for construction management to a construction contractor. Most often this contractor will be the one who will also hold the largest subcontract on the project. The major advantage of the arrangement is lower cost. It does not, however, come without price. The contractor selected may not have the qualified people to control the pjuts of the job in which he has no expertise, he may add parts of the project to his work scope that he is not qualified for, and the work he self-performs will not have the advantage of checks and balances on its quality. 

A good research project will point out in advance the limitations that should be placed against the results when they are completed. Sometimes this does not happen and bad feelings develop when the sales or advertising man reads the completed project only to find out for the first time that the major conclusion is necessarily qualified or hedged in a way that makes it useless for his purpose. 

The distinguishing feature of an auction market is the presence of bids and offers and the competitive means by which the final price is reached.
