Mind mapping

For all these reasons, mind mapping can be described as a process stimulating and facilitating whole-brain thinking. It leads to the acquisition. 

In modern times, in the late 1960s, Ross Quillian introduced the abstract concept of semantic networks (Quillian 1968). This was done in the context of human semantic memory and is defined thus  

A semantic network is a system of interrelated concepts (notions) that provide objective meaning of these concepts and their relationship with other related concepts. 

in the 1990s, computer science research on the abstract concept of a semantic network led to the concept of ontology, which was defined in the computational context by Tom Gruber (1993)  

On the surface, these two definitions are similar both describe a knowledge representation scheme. However, the difference is in the context. The first one describes a theoretical, abstract concept, while the second one, proposed 25 years later, describes the same concept as used in a computer system. Today, ontologies (based on the concept of a semantic network) are widely used in information technology but also in engineering to represent and store in computers complex knowledge systems, which can be continually updated and which can contain definitions of various concepts, their relationships, pictures, and even audio and video materials (Ogujejofor et al. 2004).

Concept maps An informal but structured representation of related terms in the domain. The notation, which is similar to a mind map, is simply concepts or phrases with labeled directed tines between them indicating a relationship it can include rich pictures or storyboards of the domain.

If there is a problem, finding out how it came about and how it may be resolved can only be determined from assessing the facts. So the crucial skill in the assessment is asking questions and building up a mental picture of the issues. As discussed before in the section on negotiation in Chapter 7, gathering information into a mind map can assist the process. It can also help to communicate the problem to others, especially those who would like to step-in and take charge for their own reasons.

A mind map is made by starting in the centre of a page with the main idea or problem, and then working outwards in as many directions as possible creating new nodes... 

It is important to work quickly and to use key words, and not phrases and draw the images in colour to highlight the new nodes. Using this methodology the mind forms associations almost instantaneously. Mind maps have great creative potential when used as part of a brainstorming session. 

As you see, there are many sides to a product and a team can easily get lost. A simple technique that greatly helps to find the way is the construction of a mind map or tree diagram (Figure 4-10). Give the product a name such as Textile Washing Machine and put this in the centre of the diagram. Then add a few legs - not more than five to seven - and jot down... 

Start with the ranked list of needs such as those obtained after the previous lesson (Figure 6-2 see also Appendix 6-1). We have given this as a mind map to keep it short. Note that all the regulations have a rank 5 (essential) you must obey these. Some needs in the map are a bit cryptic because we had to keep them short. Tartar is a calcified deposit on your teeth caries is the dental name for holes or cavities. Simulates water is short for bmshing with paste simulates drinking water with a suitable fluoride content . 

Now suppose you are in the position of the marketing director. You have been gathering ideas from customers, co-workers and outsiders. Perhaps the team has also brainstormed. The ideas are summarized in the mind map of Figure 8-2. In reality the list would probably be longer. This is quite a mess, so what to do ...

After the interview, interpret, tidy up, order and rank the needs. You may find it handy to use mind maps for this exercise. You can instead use tables in Word if you find them easier. The team will need a single ranked list of needs in the next set of lessons.
