Raman spectroscopy, long used for quaHtative analysis, has been revitalized by the availabiHty of laser sources. Raman spectroscopy is based on scattering of light with an accompanying shift in frequency. The amount by which the frequency is shifted is characteristic of the molecules that cause the scattering. Hence, measurement of the frequency shift can lead to identification of the material. 

In 1988, a comprehensive report on the technology and competitiveness of the U.S. copper industry was issued (54). This report concludes that the revitalized U.S. copper industry could compete in all but the worst foreseeable markets and that the industry s turnaround came entirely from its own efforts, with Httie governmental assistance. Today, it is in the midst of what Brown-Forman calls a revitalization that involves a new bottle and a television and Website campaign Between Friends, which features a fictional cast of young professionals negotiating adulthood with good times and Southern Comfort. (The brand s strongest markets right now are California in die United States, Canada, and Britain.)... 

There are many potential paths for revitalizing old methods of test using new array detectors and powerful processors. The only reason most testing is done by unequal path interferometry is due to the invention of the HeNe laser. If its development had been delayed a year or two and computing capabilities had been a little more advanced, most optical testing would be done with slope measuring, common path techniques that are less sensitive to the environment. 

We hope that these new curricular materials will not only facilitate the introduction of polymer topics into introductory chemistry courses but, in conjunction with other general chemistry curricular efforts, will also serve as a catalyst for revitalization of our introductory chemistry curriculum. 

It may well be that activity in the area of silene chemistry has peaked. Certainly, the number of papers currently published is lower than it was a few years ago. This may be due, at least in part, to the fact that many of the easier and more obvious experiments have been attempted. The revitalization of chemistry education has received much recent attention and taken many forms. The first laser Raman spectra were inherently time-resolved (although no dynamical processes were actually studied) by virtue of the pulsed excitation source (ruby laser) and the simultaneous detection of all Raman frequencies by photographic spectroscopy. The advent of the scanning double monochromator, while a great advance for c.w. spectroscopy, spelled the temporary end of time resolution in Raman spectroscopy. The time-resolved techniques began to be revitalized in 1968 when Bridoux and Delhaye (16) adapted television detectors (analogous to, but faster, more convenient, and more sensitive than, photographic film) to Raman spectroscopy. The advent of the resonance Raman effect provided the sensitivity required to detect the Raman spectra of intrinsically dilute, short-lived chemical species. The development of time-resolved resonance Raman (TR ) techniques (17) in our laboratories and by others (18) has led to the routine TR observation of nanosecond-lived transients (19) and isolated observations of picosecond-timescale events by TR (20-22). A specific example of a TR study will be discussed in a later section.

Floating product migrates toward the well at a rate proportionate to the hydraulic gradient. As production wells deplete oil reserves in the immediate vicinity, the oil must travel farther, over lesser gradients, to reach the well. The end result is reduced oil production. Construction of new wells at more advantageous intermediate locations will revitalize production. An alternative procedure is to install an injection well between recovery wells. The increase in the hydraulic gradient caused by the injection well would then stimulate oil flow toward the recovery wells.

In its disciplinary development at the end of the nineteenth century, physical chemistry served as a bridge, not a wedge, between the mathematical abstractions of theoretical physics and the metaphorical descriptions of organic chemistry. Actual witch burnings and other executions did not heat up until 1450 and continued until the early 1700s.
