A crucial issue for antiviral therapy is the fact that all antiviral substances rapidly select for resistance thus, monitoring and overcoming resistance has become a most important clinical paradigm of antiviral therapy. This calls for cautious use of antiviral drugs and implementation of combination therapies. In parallel, efforts in drug discovery have to be continued to develop compounds with novel mode-of-action and activity against resistant strains. This book reviews the current status of antiviral therapy, from the roads to development of new compounds to their clinical use and cost effectiveness. Individual chapters address in more detail all available drug classes and outline new approaches currently under development. 

Human behavior is influenced by many factors among these are hormones or other chemicals produced by various tissues or glands throughout the body. This paper reviews the current status of research relating hormones to human behavior. To provide background for this discussion, a brief history of this field and a primer in behavioral endocrinology are provided.

In this chapter, we review the current status of doping of SiC by ion implantation. Section 4.2 examines as-implanted depth profiles with respect to the influence of channeling, ion mass, ion energy, implantation temperature, fluence, flux, and SiC-polytype. Experiments and simulations are compared and the validity of different simulation codes is discussed. Section 4.3 deals with postimplant annealing and reviews different annealing concepts. The influence of diffusion (equilibrium and nonequilibrium) on dopant profiles is discussed, as well as a comprehensive review of defect evolution and electrical activation. Section 4.4 offers conclusions and discusses technology barriers and suggestions for future work. 

As Moustafa and Morsi remind us in Chapter One, it has been just over 100 years since a Russian botanist, M. Tswett discovered chromatography. It seems timely to review the current status of the field of chromatography and appreciate the many improvements that have been made in the field. To do this thoroughly, of course, would require many volumes, but within the limits of space, the chapters that follow surely do indicate the range of techniques and some of the important applications. It is to be hoped that careful readers will reflect on these and consider other applications. 

In this review we shall first establish the theoretical foundations of the semi-classical theory that eventually lead to the formulation of the Breit-Pauli Hamiltonian. The latter is an approximation suited to make the connection to phenomenological model Hamiltonians like the Heisenberg Hamiltonian for the description of electronic spin-spin interactions. The complete derivations have been given in detail in Ref. (21), but turn out to be very involved and are thus scattered over many pages in Ref. (21). For this reason, we aim here at a summary that is as brief and concise as possible so that all relevant connections between different levels of approximation are evident. This allows us to connect present-day quantum chemical methods to phenomenological Hamiltonians and hence to establish and review the current status of these first-principles methods applied to transition-metal clusters. 

As indicated earlier, quantum-mechanical methods, particularly molecular orbital (MO) treatments, are tools used to explore essentially all fields of thiocarbonyl chemistry. Hence, we shall first review the current status and scope of this methodology with respect to a number of important topics. This shall be followed by a survey of the experimental and theoretical data available on the thermodynamics, structure and selected aspects of the reactivity of these compounds.

In the following sections, specific application areas, either commercially practiced or potentially important, will be reviewed individually. Current status of developments as reflected in the separation performance parameters, mainly the separation factor and permeability or its equivalent, will be discussed. Emphasis is placed on the key characteristics or requirements of each application, test data indicative of any promises and, wherever appropriate, major technical and, in some cases, economical challenges.
