Cytoplasmic male sterility of sunflower was discovered in 1958, whereby one factor in the cell cytoplasm leads to the male-sterility in all plants of the second generation. However, as a result of the pollination of fertile ordinary lines, plants will stiU bear some fertile progeny. Patrice Leclercq, in France, in 1969, reported on cytoplasmic male sterility obtained in the progeny of a cross of Helianthus petio-laris Nutt and Helianthus annuus. In 1970, fertility restorer lines were found. Two years later, hybrid seeds produced by this system were made available to farmers. In 1976, 80% of the U.S. sunflower harvest had been produced on hybrid seed. [Pg.1309]

The recombinant tissue plasminogen activator alteplase has recently been shown to be an effective alternative for restoring line patency [39]. In addition, a recent randomized trial demonstrated that the use of alteplase instead of heparin once weekly, as compared with the use of heparin three times a week, as a locking solution for central venous catheters significantly reduced the incidence of catheter malfunction and bacteremia [40]. It is also significantly more expensive than heparin and urokinase, but it can reduce the costs of unblocking or replacing clotted CVCs [41]. [Pg.42]

For the second edition of 1702 Bayle supplied an amended text removing Remarks (D), (H), (I) and (M). The Paris edition of 1820-4, from which these texts are translated, restored them, showing how the text of i6gy compared with the amended version. If a situation arises whereby formation fluid or gas enters the bore bole the driller will notice an increase in the total volume of mud. Other indications such as a sudden increase in penetration rate and a decrease in pump pressure may also indicate an influx. Much depends on a quick response of the driller to close in the well before substantial volumes of formation fluid have entered the borehole. Onoe the BOP is closed, the new mud gradient required to restore balance to the system can be calculated. The heavier mud is then circulated in through the kill line and the lighter mud and influx is circulated out through the choke line. Once overbalance is restored, the BOP can be opened again and drilling operations continue. [Pg.60]

The problem of perception complete structures is related to the problem of their representation, for which the basic requirements are to represent as much as possible the functionality of the structure, to be unique, and to allow the restoration of the structure. Various approaches have been devised to this end. They comprise the use of molecular formulas, molecular weights, trade and/or trivial names, various line notations, registry numbers, constitutional diagrams 2D representations), atom coordinates (2D or 3D representations), topological indices, hash codes, and others (see Chapter 2). [Pg.292]

Resin-modified glass—ionomer lining and restorative materials add a multifunctional acidic monomer to the poly(acryhc acid) [9003-01 Hquid component of the system. Once the glass powder and Hquid are mixed, setting can proceed by the acid—glass—ionomer reaction or the added monomer can be polymerized by a free-radical mechanism to rapidly fix the material in place (74,75). The cured material stiH retains the fluoride releasing capabiHties of a glass—ionomer. [Pg.474]

Composite Resins. Many composite restorative resins have incorporated fluoride into the filler particles. One commonly used material, yttrium trifluoride [13709-49-4] is incorporated as a radiopaque filler to aid in radiographic diagnosis, and is also responsible for slow release of fluoride from the composites (280). This same effect is achieved with a barium—alumina—fluoro-siUcate glass filler in composite filling and lining materials. Sodium fluoride [7681-49-4] has also been used in composites by incorporating it into the resin matrix material where it provides long-term low level release (281-283). [Pg.494]

Since the line impedance, R + J (Xl - Xc), will reduce with a series compensation, the fault level of the system will rise. It should not matter if the fault level of the system is determined by the impedance of the source of supply, ignoring any other impedance of the circuit (Section 13.4.1 (5)). Moreover, such a situation is automatically averted through the protection of the series capacitors, as discussed below, by which the capacitors are bypassed during a line fault, the line restoring its original impedance, hence the original fault level. Nevertheless, when it is required to limit the system fault level, inductive coupling circuits may be provided to reduce the fault to the desired level. This is also discussed below ... [Pg.782]

A CT is provided in series with the spark gap to sense its operation during a line fault. As soon as there is arcing, it provides an instantaneous command to a short-circuit relay. The relay, in turn, closes the bypass breaker, within 3 to 5 cycles, leaving only the natural line impedance in the faulty eircuit. Now = 0, which limits the fault current to the natural level of the system, as if the capacitors were not connected. The shorting device is restored to its original status as soon as the fault condition is cleared. The device must be capable of interrupting the line fault... [Pg.836]

The adsorbers are usually built of steel, and may be lagged or left unlagged the horizontal type is shown in Figure 28. The vapor-laden air is fed by the blower into one adsorber which contains a bed of 6- to 8-mesh activated carbon granules 12 to 30 inches thick. The air velocity through the bed is 40 to 90 feet per minute. The carbon particles retain the vapor only the denuded air reaches the exit, and then the exhaust line. The adsorption is allowed to continue until the carbon is saturated, when the vapor-laden air is diverted to the second adsorber, while the first adsorber receives low-pressure steam fed in below the carbon bed. The vapor is reformed and carried out by the steam. The two are condensed and if the solvent is not miscible with water, it may be decanted continuously while the water is run off similarly. After a period which may be approximately 30 or 60 minutes, all the vapor has been removed, the adsorbing power of the charcoal has been restored, and the adsorber is ready to function again, while adsorber No. 2 is steamed in turn. [Pg.300]

Maintenance is concerned with retaining something in or restoring something to a state in which it can perform its required function. However, the standard does not require that the maintenance of policy is to be preventive or corrective. In other words it does not require that maintenance of the quality policy should be carried out before or after it is changed. Even so, it is advisable to maintain documented policies in line with your beliefs and to do this ... [Pg.101]

Define service restoration instructions covering the actions required to restore equipment or facilities into service, including restoration and response times. This is usually first line maintenance and may not require any repair action. [Pg.539]

Thus three lines of evidence define the rapidly dissociating receptor as the LR complex. Conditions known to uncouple R from G--first, guanine nucleotide and second, pertussis toxin—produce LR third, reconstitution of G protein restores receptor affinity, sensitivity to guanine nucleotide, and effector activation. In this sense, the ligand and binding behavior of this system is analogous to that of the beta-adrenergic receptor, where the LR and LRG complexes have already been studied with purified proteins and reconstituted membrane preparations (2,i0). [Pg.59]
