Responses neoplastic

In breast cancer patients, total PR status is measured for hormonal treatment. The presence of PR is associated with increased survival rates and hormonal responsiveness of mammary tumors. PR agonists are widely used in contraception, HRT, breast cancer, and endometrial hyperplasia. Antiprogestins such as RU486 are used for blocking ovulation and preventing implantation, and in addition they are in clinical testing for the induction of labor and to control various neoplastic transformations. 

Other papers in the Symposium deal with the antioxidant and hypolipidemic effects of IP6, its chelating effects in heavy metal toxicity, inhibition of renal stones and other beneficial effects such as inhibition of platelet aggregation, inhibition of inflammatory responses (Shamsuddin, 1998). The lipid lowering effect and anti-neoplastic effect of 1P6 were extensively reviewed (Jariwalla, 1999). Hence, 1P6 is a valuable component of rice bran in preventing disease and maintaining health. 1P6 is present at 1.8-2% in rice bran.

The single most important statistical consideration in the design of bioassays in the past was based on the point of view that what was being observed and evaluated was a simple quantal response (cancer occurred or it didn t), and that a sufficient number of animals needed to be used to have reasonable expectations of detecting such an effect. Though the single fact of whether or not the simple incidence of neoplastic tumors is increased due to an agent of concern is of interest, a much more complex model must now be considered. The time-to-tumor, patterns of tumor incidence, effects on survival rate, and age of first tumor all must now be captured in a bioassay and included in an evaluation of the relevant risk to humans. 

It now appears that both mechanical factors and finding a suitable environment are responsible for the preferred organ location of secondary growths. The relative importance of these factors is unknown and may vary depending on the type of tumor. Proctor (P4) has suggested that the initial dissemination of neoplastic cells is controlled mostly by mechanical factors, whereas later metastasis is determined more by appropriate environment. 

The usefulness of a given cell line will depend on which differentiated or neoplastic endpoints the cells express and/or whether the cell line is long-lived or immortal. Assessment of whether a cell line expresses specific metabolic or functional endpoints generally requires empirical analysis. The development of transformed/immortalized epithelial cell systems has been particularly significant, since these cells are responsible for 85-90% of all cancers and they often manifest a broad range of specialized functions in addition to their neoplastic phenotype [13, 16, 22-34],...

The pleura are connective tissue membranes composed of matrix, mesotheli-al cells, and fibroblasts. There are two types of pleural responses benign responses, such as thickening of the matrix, formation of plaques (which may calcify) or effusions, and fluid accumulation in the interpleural spaces between the visceral and parietal pleurae and neoplastic disease, or the malignancy known as mesothelioma.
