The impact on negative-CA resists of airborne base contamination differs qualitatively from their positive tone counterparts. Suppression of acid-catalyzed chemistry at the surface of a negative resist results in some film erosion at the top of the exposed fields and in some cases an apparent loss of photosensitivity, but in general the reUef images formed exhibit the expected cross-sectional profile. This is in sharp contrast with the typical behavior seen with positive-tone CA resists, where suppression of acid-catalyzed chemistry at the surface causes an insoluble surface skin. [Pg.128]

This effect of concentration is particularly pronounced with irregularly shaped particles. A possible explanation of the variation in the specific resistance is in terms of the time available for the particles to orient themselves in the growing cake. At higher concentrations, but with the same approach velocities, less time, referred to as particle relaxation time, is available for a stable cake to form and a low resistance results. [Pg.393]

Stainless Steels. Stainless steels are more resistant to msting and staining than plain carbon and low ahoy steels (47—50). This superior corrosion resistance results from the presence of chromium. Although other elements, such as copper, aluminum, shicon, nickel, and molybdenum, also increase corrosion resistance these are limited in their usefiilness. [Pg.397]

Resistance. Resistance to the cephalosporins may result from the alteration of target pencillin-binding sites (PBPs), decreased permeabdity of the bacterial ced wad and outer membrane, or by inactivation via enzyme mediated hydrolysis of the lactam ring (80,81,138—140). This resistance can be either natural or acquired. Although resistance is often attributed speciftcady to one of these factors, in reaUty it reflects the interplay of several factors. In most instances, however, resistance results from the production of a P-lactamase enzyme, which opens the P-lactam ring as depicted in Figure 2. [Pg.30]

The stainless steels contain appreciable amounts of Cr, Ni, or both. The straight chrome steels, types 410, 416, and 430, contain about 12, 13, and 16 wt % Cr respectively. The chrome—nickel steels include type 301 (18 wt % Cr and 9 wt % Ni), type 304 (19 wt % Cr and 10 wt % Ni), and type 316 (19 wt % Cr and 12 wt % Ni). Additionally, type 316 contains 2—3 wt % Mo which gready improves resistance to crevice corrosion in seawater as well as general corrosion resistance. AH of the stainless steels offer exceptional improvement in atmospheric conditions. The corrosion resistance results from the formation of a passive film and, for this reason, these materials are susceptible to pitting corrosion and to crevice corrosion. For example, type 304 stainless has very good resistance to moving seawater but does pit in stagnant seawater. [Pg.282]

Whenever corrosion resistance results from the accumulation of layers of insoluble corrosion products on the metallic surface, the effect of high velocity may be either to prevent their normal formation or to remove them after they have been formed. Either effect allows corrosion to proceed unhindered. This occurs frequently in smaU-diameter tubes or pipes through which corrosive liquids may be circulated at high velocities (e.g., condenser and evaporator tubes), in the vicinity of oends in pipe hnes, and on propellers, agitators, and cen-trifiig pumps. Filter aids should have low specific surface, since hydraulic resistance results from frictional losses incurred as liquid flows past particle surfaces. Specific surface is inversely proportional to particle size. The rate of particle dispersity and the subsequent difference in specific surface determines the deviations in filter aid quality from one material to another. For example, most of the diatomite species have approximately the same porosity however, the coarser materials experience a smaller hydraulic resistance and have much less specific surface than the finer particle sizes. [Pg.107]

Martensitic stainless steels are usually used in the softened (tempered at or above 650°C) or in the fully hardened condition (tempered at or below 250°C) so that there is no substantial reduction in corrosion resistance resulting from carbide precipitation. However, the hard soldering of knife blades can result in carbide precipitation and pitting of the blade at the area adjacent to the handle, and care must be taken in the soldering process to avoid this danger. [Pg.538]

There are many grades of stainless steel, and some are virtually non-corrodible under ordinary atmospheric conditions. Impedance Some of the errors arising from the use of linear polarisation resistance led to interest and development in a.c. systems.An early development used a fixed a.c. frequency and a commercial instrument was produced in the UK. Inaccuracies still occurred, however, and were due to the electrode impedance which is fequency dependent. Electrode reactions have a capacitance component, in addition to resistance, resulting in a requirement to measure the impedance. However, the total impedance comprises values for the reaction, solution, diffusion and capacitance. Measurements at different frequency are more reliable, particularly where high solution resistances occur. Simplifications for industrial monitoring have been developed consisting of two measurements, i.e. at a high (10 kHz) and low frequency (0-1 Hz). As for HIV, the selection of HCV drug resistant variants can be accompanied by a decrease in RC. For HCV protease inhibitor resistant variants, the level of resistance seems to be inversely related to viral fitness (Sarrazin et al. 2007 Tong et al. 2006 Yi et al. 2006). There is some evidence that viral RC can be restored by the selection of compensatory mutations within the protease gene (Sarrazin et al. 2007 Tong et al. 2006 Yi et al. 2006). However, further research is warranted to investigate to what extent viral fitness can be restored and by which mutations.
