32 was incorporated into a series of resins with from 1 wt % to 5 wt % (0.1 mol % to 0.5 mol %) of 32 present. When co-cured in four stages (final stage 260°C, 1 h), DCPD/POSS-32 gave a series of resins wifli from 1 wt % to 5 wt % (0.1 mol % to 0.5 mol %) of 32 present. The presence of 1-5 wt % of the POSS-32 macromer increased Tg in these DCPD resins (note it did not change the Tg in the aliphatic epoxy resins). However, the dependence of the resin s Tg on the weight percent of POSS-32 present was complex. [Pg.115]

The bending modulus increased as the loading of 32 was raised in these DCPD/32 resins (at temperatures both below and above the T. The tan8 peak intensity was reduced while the peak width was substantially broadened. The Tg value of the DCPD resin (182.5°C) increased by 5.8°C to 188.3°C when only 1 wt % of 32 was added. The DCPD/5 wt % 32 resin exhibited a bending storage modulus at 10 Hz of 1.54GPa at 40°C and 0.032 GPa at 240°C, which may be compared to those of the pure DCPD resin, which were 1.45 GPa and 0.027 GPa, respectively. It should be remembered that additives used for one type of resin may have detrimental effects on another resin and/or on its additives. It was reported that the interfacial properties in PA/PO blends can be seriously affected by incorporation of unsuitable additive into a blend. When PA scrap was mixed with PO containing phosphite stabilizers, a rigid membrane was formed at the interface by a chemical reaction between -NH groups of PA and phosphite acidic functionality [Luciani et al., 1997]. The membrane has two serious effects it increases the melt viscosity (thus, it reduces the throughput), and it makes dispersing the PO in PA much more difficult (what reduces the performance). Impact-modifying additives designed to inaease the drop impaa resistance of rigid PP containers, for example, may also be chosen for how they affea darity. PO bottles require low-temperature drop-impact properties in particular, which can be enhanced with additions of metallocene plastomer modifiers. However, these modifiers can create haze if they have shown large enough differences in refractive index with the base resin. SEBS was used to compatibilize PP with either PS or HIPS. The blends showed good impact and flexural strength [34]. Addition of SEBS was found to be expensive but useful in many recycling processes.
