An ultrathin section of a resin inclusion in vitrain from a subbituminous coal is shown in Figure 4. This variety of resin appeared to have a very fine granular structure in the light microscope. The micrograph shows that this consists of nearly spherical particles ranging from 300 to 700 A. in diameter. [Pg.268]

Modifications are possible to give more unusual properties to the resin. Inclusion of polyethylene glycol as polyol produces an alkyd which is water dispersible. Composite Particles, Inc. reported the use of surface-modified rubber particles in formulations of thermoset systems, such as polyurethanes, polysulfides, and epoxies [95], The surface of the mbber was oxidized by a proprietary gas atmosphere, which leads to the formation of polar functional groups like —COOH and —OH, which in turn enhanced the dispersibility and bonding characteristics of mbber particles to other polar polymers. A composite containing 15% treated mbber particles per 85% polyurethane has physical properties similar to those of the pure polyurethane. Inclusion of surface-modified waste mbber in polyurethane matrix increases the coefficient of friction. This finds application in polyurethane tires and shoe soles. The treated mbber particles enhance the flexibility and impact resistance of polyester-based constmction materials [95]. Surfactants used as lubricants are added to polymer resins to improve the flow characteristics of the plastic during processing they also stabilise the cells of polyurethane foams during the foaming process. Surfactants are either nonionic (e.g. fatty amides and alcohols), cationic, anionic (dominating class e.g. alkylbenzene sulfonates), zwitterionic, hetero-element or polymeric (e.g. EO-PO block copolymers). It has been noted in a round robin test of microcomposites that there arc large variations in test results for an apparently identical fiber and matrix system between 13 different laboratories and testing methods (Pitkethly et al., 1993). Table 3.1 and Fig 3.15 summarize the IFSS values of Courtaulds XA (untreated and standard surface treated) carbon fibers embedded in an MY 750 epoxy resin. Peptides consisting of residues from GroEL immobilized on agarose have proved effective minichaperones (Altamirano ef al., 1997). The procedure used both column chromatography and batch-wise methods to renature an insoluble protein from an inclusion body, refold apparently irreversibly denatured proteins, and to recondition enzymes that have lost activity on storage.
