Residual Phase

Decades after the onset of illness, some patients experience a distinct improvement and enter a residual phase of the disorder. In this phase, positive symptoms wane or disappear altogether. Negative symptoms, mood disturbance, and cognitive impairment may, however, persist. [Pg.124]

In the residual phase, the patient is unlikely to have an acute exacerbation even if (s)he stops taking an antipsychotic. Nevertheless, (s)he may still require treatment for residual symptoms. If medications are continued during a residual phase of schizophrenia, an atypical antipsychotic is preferred.
