Repose flow

Amidon and Houghton [48] completed a comparative study of several common methods of characterizing powder flow. Table 2 contains experimental results for a number of commonly used pharmaceutical excipients. Compressibility index, angle of repose, flow rate through an orifice, and shear cell data are presented. [Pg.294]

Angle of repose Flow rate through a 6-mm orifice Simplified shear cell ... [Pg.295]

Flowability can be measured (quantitated) by determining the angle of repose, flow through an orifice or tapped and bulk density [30]. [Pg.668]

Repose flow large large slight slight Slight... [Pg.605]

Plow chaiacterlstic.s. Angle of repose and flowability are measurable charac teristics for which standard tests are available (e.g., ASTM Test B213-48, Flow Rate of Metal Powders, etc.). A steeper angle of repose would indicate less flowability. The term Hubricity has sometimes been used for solid particles to correspond roughly to viscosity of a fluid. [Pg.1762]

If there are smeary particles which have an almost pastelike behavior and barely flow (high angle of repose), frictional anchorage of these onto the other particles in the mixture may be necessary in order to achieve good mixing. [Pg.1763]

Flowability Very free-flowing—angle of repose up to 30 1... [Pg.1913]

Until Jenike developed the rationale for storage-vessel design, a common criterion was to measure the angle of repose, use this value as the hopper angle, and then fit the bin to whatever space was available. Too often, bins were designed from an architectural or structural-engineering viewpoint rather than from the role they were to play in a process. Economy of space is certainly one vahd criterion in bin design, but others must be considered equally as well. Table 21-14 compares the principal characteristics of mass-flow and funnel-flow bins. [Pg.1935]

The angle of internal friction, a, is defined as the equilibrium angle between flowing particles and bulk or stationary solids in a bin. Figure 4 illustrates the definition. The angle of internal friction is greater than the angle of repose. [Pg.147]

As a consequence of the irregular and rough structure of the xylan particles, entanglements between particles are promoted and this fact may explain the poor flow properties of this polymer (Kumar et al., 2002 Nunthanid et al., 2004). Additionally, rheological parameters of xylan powder have also been studied, such as bulk and tapped densities, Hausner ratio, Carr s index, and angle of repose values, and they are summarized in Table 1. [Pg.66]

The angle of repose has been used in several branches of science to characterize the flow properties of solids. Nelson [1] was one of the first to use angle of repose measurements to determine the flow properties of pharmaceutical mate-... [Pg.293]

The powder s flow properties are also important because they control the physical processes that are used to manipulate the material. Carrs s index, which is a measure of powder bulk density and angle of repose, provides information on flow properties, which are important when production utilises high-speed tableting machines. [Pg.93]

The classification system introduced by Carr [29,30] was used to evaluate the flow properties of the sorbitol powders. In Carr s system, a flowable powder is defined as free flowing and will tend to flow steadily and consistently. This is to be contrasted with a floodable powder, which will exhibit an unstable, discontinuous, and gushing type of flow. The parameters in Carr s system include the angle of repose, angle of spatula, compressibility, cohesion, and dispersibility. Based on these parameters, flowability and floodability indices are calculated to determine the handling properties of bulk solids. [Pg.486]

The angle of repose of a powder blend, effective angle of internal friction (EAIF) from shear cell measurements, and the mean time to avalanche (MTA) in powder cohesivity tests are useful for assessing the flow of a tableting mixture at various scales (15 18). [Pg.377]

Controlled optimal particle size and size distribution ensures superior flow properties of coprocessed excipients and reduced reliance on addition of glidants. The volumetric flow properties of SMCC were studied in comparison with those of the physical mixture of its parent excipients (42). The particle size range of the two test samples was found to be similar, but the flow of coprocessed excipient was better than that of the physical mixture. A comparison of the flow properties of Cellactose with its parent excipients was also performed (5) by measuring the angle of repose and Hausner ratio, and Cellactose was found to have better flow characteristics than lactose or a physical mixture of cellulose and lactose. The spray-dried coprocessed product had a spherical shape and even surfaces, which resulted in improved flow properties. On similar terms, mechanically coating the 2% CSD over microfine cellulose powder resulted in improving its flow properties (43). [Pg.118]
