The powder s flow properties are also important because they control the physical processes that are used to manipulate the material. Carrs s index, which is a measure of powder bulk density and angle of repose, provides information on flow properties, which are important when production utilises high-speed tableting machines. 

Babu and coworkers [78] established that the abrasive particle density indeed offered a means for characterizing the hardness of submicron abrasive particles based on the material removal rates. The polishing rates of both Cu and Ta were measured for slurries of submicron-sized alumina particles with varying bulk densities ranging from 3.2 to 3.8 g/cm, dispersed in DI water. It was found that the polishing rate increased significantly when the dry powder bulk density exceeded a threshold value.

The purpose of SPC is to detect special causes so that they can be eliminated. In this example, two special causes were uncovered the change in input powder bulk density and the unnecessary line stoppages.

Yan et al. (2001), studied how bulk density of instant nonfat milk, spray-dried coffee, and freeze-dried coffee was affected by HHP processing times, particle size, and water activity. The experimental curves for each powder in Figure 10 show that the powder bulk density increased as the pressure increased but remained constant after the pressure reached a critical value of 207 MPa for spray-dried coffee and 276 MPa for freeze-dried coffee at different water activities. The final compressed densities were not significantly different. When the pressure is higher than the critical value, there are no void spaces between the agglomerates or primary particles even the primary particles are crushed, leaving no open or closed pores within. Bear in mind, it is assumed that the compression mechanisms are the same as those in the confined uniaxial compression tests.

This equation defines the Stokes diameter Xstokes on the basis of the density contrast Ap = ps - pm between solid and fluid phase. It should not be confused with the density contrast Ap between the porous particle phase (with Pp.etr) and the fluid. Such a definition might be meaningful for dense agglomerates with defined porosity, which can be measured by nitrogen adsorption (Staiger et al. 2002), or may be deduced from the powder bulk density (Barthel et al. 1998) or from sediment properties (Katzel 2007, pp. 183-187). However, it should be avoided for fractal aggregates, where the concept of uniform porosity fails for several reasons (no defined surface, size-dependent and locally varying porosity).
