Voltage regulator

Another of the principal functions of a substation is to provide the means to control and regulate voltages and power flow. These functions arc provided cither by feedback from an automated system or by remote instruction from the dispatch center using an array of devices and systems within the substation.

An electrochemical detector is destructive. It requires (1) a working electrode (where oxidation or reduction takes place), (2) an auxiliary electrode, and (3) a reference electrode (to regulate voltage and compensate for changes in background conductivity of the eluent). When an active substance flows into the electrochemical cell and a potential difference is applied between the working and reference electrodes, the electrolysis of the analyte yields a current (detector signal) that is a function of the applied potential. Though most diodes are used to control the direction of current flow, there are many subtypes of diodes that have been developed with other useful properties, such as light-emitting diodes and even diodes designed to operate in reverse bias mode to provide a regulated voltage. 

The EPSS should generate power that is essentially equal in quality to the power of the normal source. Requirements such as frequency regulation, voltage regulation, waveform deviation, harmonic content, and noise interference define the quality of the emergency power. 

Induction generators cannot operate independently in an isolated system. They can only function in parallel with synchronous generators that regulate voltage and supply the kilovars necessary to overcome the lagging power of the induction generation. 

The battery voltage measurement, on constant-current VCO systems, should be made just as the system reaches cutoff voltage. The regulated voltage, on either of the two systems, should then be adjusted to the manufacturer s recommended value if necessary. These adjustments must consider the effects of any automatic temperature compensation of voltage present in the system.

The interface between the renewable source and RFC system must match their current and voltage, which differ for solar and wind systems. Photovoltaic solar systems generate direct current, which may be used directly by the electrolyzer if their polarization curves are well matched, otherwise a DC/DC converter may be needed. Wind generators typically generate AC, so the interface must include an AC/DC inverter, similar to the electrolyzer s regulated voltage power supply.
