Regional strategy

The PSLP algorithm is a steepest descent procedure applied to the exact Lx penalty function (see Section 8.4). It uses a trust region strategy (see Section 6.3.2) to guar-... [Pg.298]

Air pollution often travels from its source in one state to another state. In many metropolitan areas, people live in one state and work or shop in another air pollution from cars and trucks may spread throughout the interstate area. The Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990 provide for interstate commissions on air pollution control, which are to develop regional strategies for cleaning up air pollution. The 1990 amendments also cover pollution that originates in nearby countries, such as Mexico and Canada, and drifts into the United States as well as pollution from the United States that reaches Canada and Mexico. [Pg.137]

For process optimization problems, the sparse approach has been further developed in studies by Kumar and Lucia (1987), Lucia and Kumar (1988), and Lucia and Xu (1990). Here they formulated a large-scale approach that incorporates indefinite quasi-Newton updates and can be tailored to specific process optimization problems. In the last study they also develop a sparse quadratic programming approach based on indefinite matrix factorizations due to Bunch and Parlett (1971). Also, a trust region strategy is substituted for the line search step mentioned above. This approach was successfully applied to the optimization of several complex distillation column models with up to 200 variables. [Pg.203]

A line search consists of an approximate one-dimensional minimization of the objective function along the computed direction p. This produces an acceptable step X and a new iterate xk + Xp. Function and gradient evaluations of the objective function are required in each line search iteration. In contrast, the trust region strategy minimizes approximately a local quadratic model of the function using current Hessian information. An optimal step that lies within... [Pg.21]

To many managers in the chemical industry, these concepts appear too far removed from the very practical challenge of organizing their businesses for optimum effectiveness and efficiency. They are looking for a structure that is both simple and robust, and that delivers their global and regional strategies. [Pg.122]

In recognition of the cmcial role African traditional medicine plays in health care delivery in Africa, in 2001, the Regional Strategy on Traditional Medicine for WHO African region was adopted. The Regional Strategy aims at promoting the development and institutionalization of traditional medicine into the public health care system. Furthermore, in 2001, the Summit of African Heads of States declared 2001-2010 the Decade for African Traditional Medicine. [Pg.8]

The main objectives of this project were (a) to define the basic conditions for a regional strategy for managing spent fuel that will provide solutions compatible with the economic and technological realities of the countries involved and (b) to determine what is needed for the temporary wet and dry storage of spent fuel from the research reactors in the countries of the Latin American region that participated in the project. [Pg.3]

The purpose of this model is to represent the amount of spent fuel and its derivatives that should be managed — including processing and disposal — within the framework of a regional strategy, involving the countries that participated in the TC Regional Project RLA/4/018. [Pg.41]
