Regional Productivity

The productivity of polypropylene in West Europe increased from 1.70 MT in 1999 to 1.80 MT in 2002, while it increased from 1.35 to 1.85 MT in 2002 in the United States. After 25 years of developmental efforts, China became the second largest producer of polypropylene after the United States. Its production of polypropylene fibers, excluding fibrillated fibers, was 561 KT. The productivity share was 165%i for China and 22.5% for the United States. The growth was fastest in the Middle East and Africa. In the Middle East, the production of polypropylene grew from 0.75 MT in 2000 to 1.95 MT in 2001 due to new investments by Saudi Arabia. The consumption of polypropylene in the Asia Pacific region increased by 10% in 2000 and 5% in 2001, thus draining the export capacity from Saudi and Iran. [Pg.143]


Environmental considerations also were reflected in coal production and consumption statistics, including regional production patterns and economic sector utilization characteristics. Average coal sulfur content, as produced, declined from 2.3% in 1973 to 1.6% in 1980 and 1.3% in 1990. Coal ash content declined similarly, from 13.1% in 1973 to 11.1% in 1980 and 9.9% in 1990. These numbers clearly reflect a trend toward utilization of coal that produces less SO2 and less flyash to capture. Emissions from coal in the 1990s were 14 x 10 t /yr of SO2 and 450 x 10 t /yr of particulates generated by coal combustion at electric utiUties. The total coal combustion emissions from all sources were only slightly higher than the emissions from electric utiUty coal utilization (6). [Pg.4]

Perhaps the most striking feature shown in Table 4 is the large imbalance between regional production and consumption in the Middle East as compared to OECD Europe. In 1992, the Middle East produced five times more cmde petroleum than it consumed, and OECD Europe consumed about three times more cmde petroleum than it produced that is, in 1992, the Middle East exported about 81% of its production of cmde petroleum, whereas OECD Europe imported about 66% of the cmde petroleum that it consumed. In the Asia/AustraUa region, 2419 x 10 m /d (15.2 x 10 bbl/d), or 23.3% of the world s total, was consumed in 1992. In the United States, production of cmde petroleum peaked in 1971 and has declined since then so that only 54.5% of the U.S. cmde petroleum consumed in 1992 was produced domestically. In Latin America, production of cmde petroleum stood at about 150% of consumption, whereas in 1978, production and consumption were about equal. [Pg.220]
