Refinery addition

Spent clay and its associated disposal problems represent a concern for all refineries. Additional research may yield new and more valuable uses for this byproduct material. [Pg.2382]

It is possible to calculate the properties of wider cuts given the characteristics of the smaller fractions when these properties are additive in volume, weight or moles. Only the specific gravity, vapor pressure, sulfur content, and aromatics content give this advantage. All others, such as viscosity, flash point, pour point, need to be measured. In this case it is preferable to proceed with a TBP distillation of the wider cuts that correspond with those in an actual refinery whose properties have been measured. [Pg.331]

Olefins are produced primarily by thermal cracking of a hydrocarbon feedstock which takes place at low residence time in the presence of steam in the tubes of a furnace. In the United States, natural gas Hquids derived from natural gas processing, primarily ethane [74-84-0] and propane [74-98-6] have been the dominant feedstock for olefins plants, accounting for about 50 to 70% of ethylene production. Most of the remainder has been based on cracking naphtha or gas oil hydrocarbon streams which are derived from cmde oil. Naphtha is a hydrocarbon fraction boiling between 40 and 170°C, whereas the gas oil fraction bods between about 310 and 490°C. These feedstocks, which have been used primarily by producers with refinery affiliations, account for most of the remainder of olefins production. In addition a substantial amount of propylene and a small amount of ethylene ate recovered from waste gases produced in petroleum refineries. [Pg.171]

Since 1960, about 95% of the synthetic ammonia made in the United States has been made from natural gas worldwide the proportion is about 85%. Most of the balance is made from naphtha and other petroleum Hquids. Relatively small amounts of ammonia are made from hydrogen recovered from coke oven and refinery gases, from electrolysis of salt solutions, eg, caustic chlorine production, and by electrolysis of water. In addition there are about 20 ammonia plants worldwide that use coal as a hydrogen source. [Pg.243]

Each refiner has the flexibiUty to choose the specific formulation to produce based on the economics of the individual refineries. REG meeting the statutory requirements must be sold in the nine areas of the country which have the worst ozone (qv) problem. In addition, all other areas of the country which exceed the ozone NAAQS may elect the REG regulations, and EPA has estimated that 40% of the nation s gasoline should be subject to REG rules (66). [Pg.190]

Chromium is the most effective addition to improve the resistance of steels to corrosion and oxidation at elevated temperatures, and the chromium—molybdenum steels are an important class of alloys for use in steam (qv) power plants, petroleum (qv) refineries, and chemical-process equipment. The chromium content in these steels varies from 0.5 to 10%. As a group, the low carbon chromium—molybdenum steels have similar creep—mpture strengths, regardless of the chromium content, but corrosion and oxidation resistance increase progressively with chromium content. [Pg.117]

The butane-containing streams in petroleum refineries come from a variety of different process units consequently, varying amounts of butanes in mixtures containing other light alkanes and alkenes are obtained. The most common recovery techniques for these streams are lean oil absorption and fractionation. A typical scheme involves feeding the light hydrocarbon stream to an absorber-stripper where methane is separated from the other hydrocarbons. The heavier fraction is then debutanized, depropanized, and de-ethanized by distillation to produce C, C, and C2 streams, respectively. Most often the stream contains butylenes and other unsaturates which must be removed by additional separation techniques if pure butanes are desired. [Pg.402]

Butene. Commercial production of 1-butene, as well as the manufacture of other linear a-olefins with even carbon atom numbers, is based on the ethylene oligomerization reaction. The reaction can be catalyzed by triethyl aluminum at 180—280°C and 15—30 MPa ( 150 300 atm) pressure (6) or by nickel-based catalysts at 80—120°C and 7—15 MPa pressure (7—9). Another commercially developed method includes ethylene dimerization with the Ziegler dimerization catalysts, (OR) —AIR, where R represents small alkyl groups (10). In addition, several processes are used to manufacture 1-butene from mixed butylene streams in refineries (11) (see BuTYLENEs). [Pg.425]

Desalting is a water-washing operation performed at the production field and at the refinery site for additional cmde oil cleanup. If the petroleum from the separators contains water and dirt, water washing can remove much of the water-soluble minerals and entrained soflds. If these cmde oil contaminants are not removed, they can cause operating problems duting refinery processiag, such as equipment plugging and corrosion as well as catalyst deactivation. [Pg.201]

The early developments of solvent processing were concerned with the lubricating oil end of the cmde. Solvent extraction processes are appHed to many usefiil separations in the purification of gasoline, kerosene, diesel fuel, and other oils. In addition, solvent extraction can replace fractionation in many separation processes in the refinery. For example, propane deasphalting (Fig. 7) has replaced, to some extent, vacuum distillation as a means of removing asphalt from reduced cmde oils. [Pg.208]

The hydrocarbon cracking operations that generate feed olefins generally do not produce sufficient isobutane to satisfy the reaction requirements. Additional isobutane must be recovered from cmde oil or natural gas Hquids or generated by other refinery operations. A growing quantity of isobutane is produced by the isomerization of / -butane [106-97-8]. [Pg.47]

Ta.loPhospha.ta.tlon, Phosphatation is performed as described above with the addition of color-precipitating chemicals and a series of mud-desweetening steps, which remove a greater amount of color (30—50%), ash, and turbidity. Talo (a trademark of Tate Lyle, pic, U.K.) phosphatation is the process mentioned above that is widely used ia white end refineries. It has almost replaced traditional phosphatation (11). [Pg.19]

Extraction Solvent. Dimethyl sulfoxide is immiscible with alkanes but is a good solvent for most unsaturated and polar compounds. Thus, it can be used to separate olefins from paraffins (93). It is used in the Institute Fransais du Pntrole (IFF) process for extracting aromatic hydrocarbons from refinery streams (94). It is also used in the analytical procedure for determining polynuclear hydrocarbons in food additives (qv) of petroleum origin (95). [Pg.112]

Sulfuiized and sulfurchlorinated unsaturated compounds and meicaptans are used as lubricant additives (antiwear, friction modification, load-carrying, extreme pressure and temperature, corrosion inhibition, and antioxidants), refinery catalyst regeneration compounds, steel processing (annealing) aids, and vulcanization catalysts (see Lubrication and lubricants). [Pg.207]
