Recycled Food Packaging

Recycled paper products are used in food packaging. Such products contain 4,4 -/v s(diethylamino)benzophenone, 4,4 -/vs(dimethylamino) benzophenone, 4-(dimethylamino)benzophenone, and bisphenol A, which are genotoxic. These compounds, however, are found in foods in concentrations that are too low to account for the genotoxic effects found upon investigationJ74 The study fails to take into account the presence of other xenobiotics that would produce a mixture with enhanced genotoxicity.

The recycled plastic will also have a degree of different contaminants that would eliminate its use in certain devices or products, such as in medicine, electronics, and food packaging. However, within these market applications there are acceptable designs with three-layer coextruded, coinjected, or laminated structures having the contaminated plastic as the center layer, isolated by clean plastics around it and no migration occurring.

Actually, according to newer German investigations [31], dibutyl phthalate and mineral oil components have been found in recycled paper used for food packaging, giving rise to serious concern about potential human exposure. Also bisphenol A, DEHP and alkylphenol ethoxylates have recently been found in recycled paper-based food packaging on the Italian market [32].

The commercial potential for recycling post-consumer PET is not limited by lack of depolymerizing technology. Many options are available with varying degrees of capital intensity. The technologies most probable to provide satisfactory quality product, suitable for reuse in food packaging, are likely to cost US 1.00/kg or more and require capacities of over 20000 annual tonnes. 

BPA can occur due to an incomplete polymerization, followed by migration into the food or environment [200], Furthermore, BPA monomer is used as color developer in thermal paper and is consequently also present in recycled paper and paperboard which can be used as food packaging material [201]. Human exposure to BPA is believed to occur mainly through contaminated food, although recently dermal exposure and absorption have gained attention [202-204].
