Records Environmental Management

The major change is in Section 4.3.1 - Environmental Aspects under ISO 14001 and Planning for hazard identification, risk assessment and risk control under OHSAS 18001. OHSAS is much more detailed and prescriptive in how hazards are identified, and how risks are identified, assessed and controlled compared to how aspects and impacts are managed under ISO 14001. The environmental benefits derived from implementation of ISO14001 would similarly be expected to be realized by including occupational health and safety into the applicability of an environmental management system. For the record, many organizations have chosen to add occupational health and safety into the scope of their ISO 14001 EMS.

These costs are easily calculable when the omission has led to unintended consequences well identified and with a clear cause-effect relationship and are usually documented in the records of the reparative activity executed. For example, repair costs of a product under warranty as a result of not having executed the final inspection of the product or administrative penalty for breach of statutory duty in environmental management due to not having identified this legal requirement.

To ensure an environmental management system continues to meet the policy objectives, regular checking of its effectiveness is necessary and, where found wanting, suitable corrective action should be initiated. There are four aspects that contribute to the maintenance of environmental standards monitoring and measurement corrective and preventive action for non-compliance records and an enviroiunental management system audit. 

Procedures should be established to periodically monitor all operations that may have an environmental impact, and similar scheduled periodic checks should be made to ensure that procedures and operations are still in line with regulatory and other requirements. If equipment is involved in the monitoring process then procedures should also be in place to ensure correct calibration. Procedures are also needed to record any preventative or corrective actions identified and to ensure that they are completed to schedule. The whole EMS should be audited periodically to check that it is consistent with the planned policy and has been properly implemented. The details of audits should be discussed and reviewed by management at the highest level with a view to continuous improvement through the modification of both policy and procedures. 

Environmental Quality. The abstracts come from journals or digests published by CSA on important issues including environmental pollution, toxicological studies of industrial chemicals, ecological impacts of biologically active chemicals, as well as health, safety, and risk management in occupational situations. Conduct a review of chemical agent disposal facility operations and records management for the ambient air monitoring for agent, and for exhaust stack and other waste stream emissions of agent and other substances of potential concern (SOPCs) that are characteristic of these facilities.
