Receiving inspections sampling

Step 1. Receive the sample according to the guidelines and protocol of the receiving institution. The persons who handle the sample must be properly trained and prepared. To receive and process the sample, the person must wear a laboratory coat, face protection, and gloves. The sample is unpacked and inspected in a hood behind a shield. (Note If the sample is packaged at an altitude different than that of the receiving location, there will be a pressure differential that must be taken into account when opening the sample.) This process should be performed as promptly as possible after sample receipt to minimize decay of shorter-lived radionuclides. [Pg.145]

For the off-site analysis, the designated laboratories are used. These laboratories have instrumental capability, preparedness, and analytical methods to analyze the samples taken by the inspectors or by the inspected SP representatives. The samples sent (after the agreement of the inspected SP) to the off-site laboratory are coded, and therefore the laboratory receiving the samples will not know their origin. The laboratories are capable of confirming the presence or absence of CWC-related chemicals and other chemicals, but must report only data relevant to the purpose of the analysis as defined by the OPCW. The laboratory s work on the OPCW samples is confidential, which is a normal practice when regarding the work with laboratory s other collaborators and commercial business partners. Receiving Inspection. Many types of tests have been devised for testing raw materials. Depending upon the severity of the need for inspection, the types of tests selected may vary from being basic and simple to sophisticated and complex. Some of the most common basic tests are the melt index test, specific gravity, bulk density, spiral flow test, and viscosity tests. Gel permeation chromatography, infrared analysis, thermal analysis, and rheometry are some of the more elaborate raw material quality control tests. These tests are discussed in detail in Chapter 7. Some processors also choose to mold test bars from a small sample of raw material and conduct physical tests such as tensile, impact, and flexural tests and then evaluate the results to see if they meet the preestablished specifications. [Pg.444]

Container—The container must be a clean, dry container of convenient size to receive the sample. All connections from the sample probe to the sample container must be free of leaks. The container is constructed in such a manner that it prevents evaporation loss. The construction must allow cleaning, interior inspection, and complete mixing of the sample prior to removal. Suppose we concentrate for a moment on residue analyses. SOPs are basic to your operation, to every facet of your operation. You did not do the field work or the sampling but you assume these were done properly. You assume responsibility for the samples that arrive on your doorstep. In this work, chain of custody is critical. Who receives a box of samples, who logs it in and how, who opens and inspects the contents, who decides if the storage was correct How are the sample numbers logged in, how is the container stored until the samples are ready for analysis, who assumes custody of each sample and when Residue analyses are far more than grabbing a sample from the freezer, homogenizing it in isooctane and shoving it into a GC. I repeat, chain of custody and documentation of chain of custody is critical in this work. [Pg.20]

On their arrival at the OPCW Laboratory, all seal numbers and the end pattern of the fiber-optic seals will be compared to the seal numbers and photographs received from the inspection site, if so requested in the presence of an ISP representative.
