Reasoning Principles

For advancement in scientific studies propositions must be identified with sensitivity. Many researchers make propositions about their studies and then try to verify these in rational or experimental ways. For instance, when metals are heated they expand is a proposition, which has been suggested after observation on several metals and then generalized to cover many others. It wiU remain true until someone with evidence falsifies this proposition. Up today no experimental evidence has been found for falsification and it is subject to falsification all the time. Some propositions can be set forth by rational or experimental suggestions [Pg.120]

Such an analysis needs to include not only the obvious hazards, but also the more elusive contingent hazards which may arise due to unusual combinations of circumstances. The idea that unsymmetrical molecules will orient at an interface is now so well accepted that it hardly needs to be argued, but it is of interest to outline some of the history of the concept. The Fourier sum, involving the three dimensional FFT, does not currently run efficiently on more than perhaps eight processors in a network-of-workstations environment. The scientific method, as mentioned, involves observation and experimentation (research) to discover or establish facts. These are followed by deduction or hypothesis, establishing theories or principles. This sequence, however, may be reversed. In principle, emission spectroscopy can be applied to both atoms and molecules. Molecular infrared emission, or blackbody radiation played an important role in the early development of quantum mechanics and has been used for the analysis of hot gases generated by flames and rocket exhausts. Although the availability of FT-IR instrumentation extended the application of IR emission spectroscopy to a wider array of samples, its applications remain limited. For this reason IR emission is not considered further in this text.
