Direct-reading polychromators (Figure 3b) have a number of exit slits and photomultiplier tube detectors, which allows one to view emission from many lines simultaneously. More than 40 elements can be determined in less than one minute. The choice of emission lines in the polychromator must be made before the instrument is purchased. The polychromator can be used to monitor transient signals (if the appropriate electronics and software are available) because unlike slew-scan systems it can be set stably to the peak emission wavelength. Background emission cannot be measured simultaneously at a wavelength close to the line for each element of interest. The commercial units have a very low thermal capacity and very high response speeds. Some are available with several independent channels and a common cold junction. Each channel is scanned in turn by the instrument, and the readings either displayed or stored for future recovery. Accuracies of better than 0.2 per cent are possible. Thermocouples are available to cover a very wide range of temperatures, their cost is low and they have a small mass, so minimizing the intrusive effect on the surface at the point where the temperature is being measured. A second data set (CU97, 1535 reflections of all parities, 0 < (sin )/ 1.3 h, k, l > 0 and h, k, l < 0) was recorded in continuous scan mode (i.e. the detector was read out during the co -moves).
