The data presented in Figure 8 graphically illustrate the tremendous and rapid growth in interest in FOSS chemistry, especially for patented applications. This looks set to continue with current applications in areas as diverse as dendrimers, composite materials, polymers, optical materials, liquid crystal materials, atom scavengers, and cosmetics, and, no doubt, many new areas to come. These many applications derive from the symmetrical nature of the FOSS cores which comprise relatively rigid, near-tetrahedral vertices connected by more flexible siloxane bonds. The compounds are usually thermally and chemically stable and can be modified by conventional synthetic methods and are amenable to the usual characterization techniques. The recent commercial availability of a wide range of simple monomers on a multigram scale will help to advance research in the area more rapidly.

As the scientific and public Information base on the adverse effects of urban air pollution Increased, so did public demand for control measures. However there are other sources and factors which can obscure the benefits of these control actions. For example, consider urban growth. In 1980 there were 35 cities with populations over 4 million. By the year 2000 this number will nearly double to 66, and by the 2025, this number will more than double to an estimated 135 (9). In developing countries, from 1980 to the year 2000, It Is estimated that twice as many people will live In cities of a total population of 1 million or more In Latin America (101 million to 232 million) and East Asia (132 million to 262 million). Three times as many people will live In cities of 1 million or more In South Asia (106 million to 328 million) and four times as many In Africa (36 million to 155 million) (10). L/evelopment of sophisticated surface analytical techniques over the past two decades has revived interest in the study of phenomena that occur at the electrode-solution interface. As a consequence of this renewed activity, electrochemical surface science is experiencing a rapid growth in empirical information. The symposium on which this book was based brought together established and up-and-coming researchers from the three interrelated disciplines of electrochemistry, surface science, and metal-cluster chemistry to help provide a better focus on the current status and future directions of research in electrochemistry. Although the current technology of receptor models is still in an early stage of development, the rapid growth of these techniques is certain to provide an important new tool to regulatory agencies within the immediate future.
