A 14-year-old boy had a seizure after the administration of human diploid rabies cell vaccine simultaneously with rabies immune globulin. The sjmptoms developed within minutes after injection. After treatment and about 2 hours later, his mental status returned to normal (6). [Pg.3013]

Rabies immune globulin should be given as soon as possible after exposure and must be combined with immunization using human diploid cell-derived rabies vaccine. Passive immunization is not recommended for individuals with demonstrated antibody response to preexposure prophylaxis with rabies vaccine. The answer is (A). [Pg.541]

Injected forms of antibodies which have been generated in another body or animal can be isolated, purified, and administered as standard human immune serum globulin (ISG), and ISG plus preparation, or as an animal antiserum or antitoxin. Some serums which are available are those for rabies, snake and insect bites, botulism, and tetanus. Temporary immunity of up to six months to hepatitis can be imparted by one "gamma globulin" shot. More permanent active immunity is available to health care workers. [Pg.195]
