In North America at the annual PittCon exposition there are papers and workshops concerning the future need for RMs, including the CITAC workshops. In Canada, in June 1993 in Quebec as part of the Annual Conference of the Canadian Society for Chemistry, a RM symposium was held lectures from it were the basis for a CRC RM book (Clement et al. 1997). Further examples include reports of regional activities in China (Chai 1993) and Australia (Millar et al. 1995).

In recognition of the rapid expansion of computational chemistry in the 1980s, Andre Bandrauk and Andre Michel of the University of Sherbrooke organized the First Canadian Symposium on Computational Chemistry in May 1991 in Orford, Quebec. The conference included invited papers on dynamics, density functional methods, molecular modeling, Monte Carlo methods, and topics in quantum chemistry and statistical mechanics. About half of the invited speakers were from abroad (mostly from the United States).

The compact calls for three subcommittees— laboratory, legal, and disease surveillance—and requires participants hold regular conference calls about those issues. The Terms of Reference also spell out exactly why the compact was formed to identify opportunities to improve collaborative early warning infectious disease surveillance and surveillance information sharing between the previously mentioned states and Quebec, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia. 

A second year passed and in March 2006 a larger conference took place in Burlington, Vermont. For the first time Quebec health officials participated, allowing for more cohesive collaboration all along the border. The conference featured discussions about disease surveillance procedures and alerts and included a table-top exercise about a foodborne bacterial outbreak that criss-crossed state and Canadian borders. The exercise allowed health officials to hear how their counterparts in other states and provinces would handle the information they had. Who would they tell When And how ...
