Benzethonium chloride is a quaternary ammonium compound used in pharmaceutical formulations as an antimicrobial preservative. Typically, it is used for this purpose in injections, ophthalmic and otic preparations at concentrations 0.01-0.02% w/v. Benzethonium chloride may also be used as a wetting and solubilizing agent, and as a topical disinfectant. [Pg.64]

In cosmetics such as deodorants, benzethonium chloride may be used as an antimicrobial preservative in concentrations up to 0.5% w/v. [Pg.64]

Disinfectants. Several disinfecting agents can be used in hatcheries and two are of particular interest. Because they are not considered dmg or food additive uses by FDA, povidone—iodine compounds can be used to disinfect the surface of eggs (9). Benzalkonium chloride [68424-85-1] and benzethonium chloride (quaternary ammonium compounds), are allowed at 2 mg/L by FDA to disinfect water containing fish. These compounds are also known to have therapeutic properties, especially against external bacteria (9). [Pg.322]

Oral Cleansing Products. Toothpastes and mouthwashes are considered cosmetic oral cleansers as long as claims about them are restricted to cleaning or deodorization. Because deodorization may depend on reduction of microbiota in the mouth, several antimicrobial agents, either quaternaries, such as benzethonium chloride [121 -54-0] or phenoHcs, such as triclosan [3380-35-5] are permitted. Products that include anticaries or antigingivitis agents or claim to provide such treatment are considered dmgs. [Pg.299]

The two-phase titration is based on the reaction of anionic surfactants with cations—normally large cationic surfactants—to form an ion pair. The preferred cationic is benzethonium chloride (Hyamine 1622, 1) because of the purity of the commercially available product. On neutralization of the ionic charges, the ion pair has nonpolar character and can be extracted continuously into the organic phase, e.g., chloroform, as it is formed. The reaction is monitored by addition of a water-soluble cationic dye, dimidium bromide (2), and a water-soluble anionic dye, disulfine blue (3). The cationic dye forms an extractable... [Pg.162]

When performing the two-phase titration with benzethonium chloride in alkaline medium and in the presence of phenolphthalein as indicator, not only the monosulfonates but also the di- and polysulfonates are determined [19]. The content of di- and polysulfonates is the difference between two titration results giving the amounts of total sulfonates and monosulfonates. Identifying the endpoint requires some experience. [Pg.163]

Zjoample Many antiseptics are quaternary ammonium salts ith detergent-like act ion and Benzethonium chloride (11) is particularly efficient. The benzyl group can be added by alkylation of (12) (Chapter T 8) which contains two sets of 1,2-diX relationships. [Pg.53]

Other quaternary ammonium germicides, ben-zethonium chloride and benzalkonium bromide, have been used in several ophthalmic solutions. While these have the advantage of not being a chemical mixture, they do not possess the bactericidal effectiveness of benzalkonium chloride and are subject to the same incompatibility limitations. In addition, the maximum concentration for benzethonium chloride is 0.01%. Several new products that form gels in the eye, like Timolol Gel Forming Solution and Timoptic-XE, employ another quaternary preservative, BDAB, in the formulation. [Pg.433]

Theory In general, quaternary nitrogen containing compounds like—choline chloride, acetylpyridinium chloride, benzethonium chloride, and bethanechol chloride readily form insoluble salts quantitatively with tetraphenyl boron and this puts forward the basis for the gravimetric assay of the above cited pharmaceutical substances. [Pg.187]
