Polymers, quaternary ammonium containing

OH -conducting, alkaline polymer free of metal ions and consisting of counter ions bound to the quaternary-ammonium containing polymer backbone has been reported with reasonable preliminary results (133-153 pm thick, 0.0092 S/cm 30°C, 100% RH) [110]. H2I Air alkaline membrane fuel cells that showed encouraging preliminary results with Pt and transition metal catalyst cathodes in CO2 free air have also been reported recently by Acta S.p.A. [111]. 

The reactions are catalyzed by tertiary amines, quaternary ammonium salts, metal salts, and basic ion-exchange resins. The products are difficult to purify and generally contain low concentrations of acryhc acid and some diester which should be kept to a minimum since its presence leads to product instabihty and to polymer cross-linking. 

The cationic acrylamide polymers may contain either tertiary amine or quaternary ammonium groups. Because of their positive charge, they are self-retaining on pulp fibers therefore, they can be used effectively in nonalum systems. 

Results indicate that the effectiveness of quaternary ammonium salt polymers in stabilizing swelling clays and mineral fine particles is dependent on monomer chemical structure and polymer molecular weight. Long flexible pendant sidechains containing quaternary nitrogen atoms appear to be required for these polymers to function as mineral fine particle stabilizers. 

Polymer-bound catalysts containing both quaternary ammonium centres and oligo-(oxyethylene) links of the type shown in Scheme 1.10 have been synthesized [34]. There is an increase in catalytic activity resulting from a cooperative effect of the two types of catalyst upon nucleophilic reactions, compared to that of simple quaternary ammonium catalysts and crown ethers.
