Applications of GC X GC can be grouped into the broad categories of qualitative and quantitative studies. By far the more numerous are qualitative studies, and in this group will be included those studies that also pay attention to the retention aspects of GC X GC. This proposal describes the development of a new, systematic approach for qualitatively and quantitatively studying surface-biomolecule interactions by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDl) mass spectrometry (MS). At times there are very small amounts of tissue available for experimentation. Nevertheless, it is possible to isolate RNA from limited amounts of samples such as tumor biopsies or laser capture microdissected material [33], Although one can expect only small amounts of RNA from such tissues or cells, yields of RNA are enough for use in various applications, such as gene expression-related qualitative and quantitation studies using RT-PCR or even cDNA libraries [31,34], Small-scale RNA isolation is possible using commercially available kits that are available to isolate either total RNA or mRNA (Table 7.3). A third type of MS/MS instruments is a hybrid of tandem-in-space and tandem-in-time devices, including the Q-trap (QQ-2D-linear trap) [45] and the ion trap-FT-ICR (2D-linear ion trap-FT-ICR) [46]. The Q-trap takes the configuration of triple quadrupole, with the third quadrupole replaced by a 2D-linear ion trap. The uniqueness of this design is that the 2D-linear ion trap component can be used to perform either (a) a normal quadrupole scan function in the RF/DC mode or (b) a trap scan function by applying the RF potential to the quadrupole. It is well-suited for both qualitative and quantitative studies. In the case of ion Trap-FT-ICR, it combines ion accumulation and MS" features of a 2D-linear ion trap with excellent mass analysis capability (mass resolution, mass accuracy, and sensitivity) of FT-ICR. 

Proteomics The study of the proteome not technology limited the qualitative and quantitative study of the proteome under various conditions including protein expression, modification, localization, function, and protein-protein interactions, as a means of understanding biological processes. 

As our third technique, we have begun studies on tracer quantities of selected fission products, and preliminary results indicate some solubility in the melt for both europium and strontium. Material balances or decontamination factors are not available at this time. Both qualitative and quantitative studies of fission product behavior are continuing. The results of these studies will be reported as the data become available. 

So far there have been relatively few applications of electrophoresis at elevated hydrostatic pressures. However, this method has several advantages over other methods such as optical methods it is a simple and direct means of studying dissociation and denaturation processes, and of describing the thermodynamics of protein-ligand interactions. These qualitative and quantitative studies can be performed using small amounts of pure proteins or complex protein mixtures. In addition, this technique permits separation and subsequent isolation of the different protein conformational states or subunits. 

The analysis of natural radioactive materials is relatively straightforward, since it usually involves the determination of a small number of well-known radioisotopes of a few elements. The determination of manmade radionuclides in air samples is more complicated, because several radionuclides of a number of elements may be involved both qualitative and quantitative studies may be needed, and carriers may have to be identified.

Although the field of mammalian cell genetics is relatively young and although the procedure for mutation induction in mammalian cell culture has just been developed, qualitative and quantitative studies on mutation induction not only are presently feasible but also can serve as a useful intermediate in bridging the gap between mutation studies involving microorganisms and whole mammals. 

Different assays have been developed to qualitatively and quantitatively study cell adhesion. Usually, these assays probe the ability of cells to remain attached to an adhesive substrate when exposed to a certain detachment force. They can be classified into single-cell assays and bulk assays that analyze the average behavior of large cellular populations (an overview is given in Ref. 59). 

Our results showed that EVLS in connection with the adsorption procedure [adsorptive or adsorptive transfer stripping, i.e., AdS or AdTS) is a useful tool for qualitative and quantitative studies of short oligonucleotides and can be used as a proposed transducer for the electrochemical sensor. EVLS sensitively reflects not only the sequence of nucleobases in the ODN chain, but also the structure of ODN, which can be changed on electrode surfaces. 

It was found that EVLS is capable to detect (i) minor signals hidden in major ones, (ii) small changes in ODN structure and the interaction between ODN and electrode surface, and (iii) potentially closed signals (resolution of overlapped peaks). On the basis of the above-mentioned advantages, EVLS in connection with the adsorption procedure fulfills the requirements for a perspective and promising tool for qualitative and quantitative studies in bioanalysis in bio- and nanotechnologies. Therefore, the implementation of EVLS in electrochemical analyzers should be of great interest.
