Pyrolysis Alternatives

Pyrolysis of tires involves the application of heat to produce chemical changes and derive various products such as carbon black. Although several experimental pyrolysis units have been tried, none has yet demonstrated sustained commercial operation. [Pg.15]


Electron-deficient alkenes add stereospecifically to 4-hydroxy-THISs with formation of endo-cycloadducts. Only with methylvinyl-ketone considerable amounts of the exo isomer are produced (Scheme 8) (16). The adducts (6) may extrude hydrogen sulfide on heating with methoxide producing 2-pyridones. The base is unnecessary with fumaronitrile adducts. The alternative elimination of isocyanate Or sulfur may be controlled using 7 as the dipolarenOphile. The cycloaddition produces two products, 8a (R = H, R = COOMe) and 8b (R = COOMe, R =H) (Scheme 9) (17). Pyrolysis of 8b leads to extrusion of furan and isocyanate to give a thiophene. The alternative S-elimi-nation can be effected by oxidation of the adduct and subsequent pyrolysis. [Pg.5]

Chemical recovery ia sodium-based sulfite pulpiag is more complicated, and a large number of processes have been proposed. The most common process iavolves liquor iaciaeration under reduciag conditions to give a smelt, which is dissolved to produce a kraft-type green liquor. Sulfide is stripped from the liquor as H2S after the pH is lowered by CO2. The H2S is oxidized to sulfur ia a separate stream by reaction with SO2, and the sulfur is subsequendy burned to reform SO2. Alternatively, ia a pyrolysis process such as SCA-Bidemd, the H2S gas is burned direcdy to SO2. A rather novel approach is the Sonoco process, ia which alumina is added to the spent liquors which are then burned ia a kiln to form sodium aluminate. In anther method, used particulady ia neutral sulfite semichemical processes, fluidized-bed combustion is employed to give a mixture of sodium carbonate and sodium sulfate, which can be sold to kraft mills as makeup chemical. [Pg.274]

Many other recovery alternatives have been proposed that iaclude ion exchange (qv), pyrolysis, and wet combustion. However, these have not gained general acceptance. A limited number of calcium-based mills are able to utilize their spent pulpiag liquors to produce by-products such as lignosulfates for oil-weU drilling muds, vanillin, yeast, and ethyl alcohol (see PETROLEUM Vanillin). [Pg.274]

Alternatives to oxychlorination have also been proposed as part of a balanced VCM plant. In the past, many vinyl chloride manufacturers used a balanced ethylene—acetylene process for a brief period prior to the commercialization of oxychlorination technology. Addition of HCl to acetylene was used instead of ethylene oxychlorination to consume the HCl made in EDC pyrolysis. Since the 1950s, the relative costs of ethylene and acetylene have made this route economically unattractive. Another alternative is HCl oxidation to chlorine, which can subsequently be used in dkect chlorination (131). The SheU-Deacon (132), Kel-Chlor (133), and MT-Chlor (134) processes, as well as a process recently developed at the University of Southern California (135) are among the available commercial HCl oxidation technologies. Each has had very limited industrial appHcation, perhaps because the equiHbrium reaction is incomplete and the mixture of HCl, O2, CI2, and water presents very challenging separation, purification, and handling requkements. HCl oxidation does not compare favorably with oxychlorination because it also requkes twice the dkect chlorination capacity for a balanced vinyl chloride plant. Consequently, it is doubtful that it will ever displace oxychlorination in the production of vinyl chloride by the balanced ethylene process. [Pg.422]

Ethylene. Where ethylene is ia short supply and fermentation ethanol is made economically feasible, such as ia India and Bra2il, ethylene is manufactured by the vapor-phase dehydration of ethanol. The production of ethylene [74-85-1] from ethanol usiag naturally renewable resources is an active and useful alternative to the pyrolysis process based on nonrenewable petroleum. This route may make ethanol a significant raw material source for produciag other chemicals. [Pg.415]

Heat is transferred by direct contact with solids that have been preheated by combustion gases. The process is a cycle of alternate heating and reactingperiods. The Wulf process for acetylene by pyrolysis of natural gas utilizes a heated brick checker work on a 4-min cycle of heating and reacting. Alternative proeesses for the reeyeling of fibre-reinforeed plastie (FRP), and their applieation in Japan, are briefly reviewed. Alternative approaches consist in heat extraction by means of thermal analysis, thermal volatilisation and (laser) desorption techniques, or pyrolysis. In most cases mass spectrometric detection modes are used. Early MS work has focused on thermal desorption of the additives from the bulk polymer, followed by electron impact ionisation (El) [98,100], Cl [100,107] and field ionisation (FI) [100]. These methods are limited in that the polymer additives must be both stable and volatile at the higher temperatures, which is not always the case since many additives are thermally labile. More recently, soft ionisation methods have been applied to the analysis of additives from bulk polymeric material. These ionisation methods include FAB [100] and LD [97,108], which may provide qualitative information with minimal sample pretreatment. A comparison with FAB [97] has shown that LD Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (LD-FTTCR) is superior for polymer additive identification by giving less molecular ion fragmentation. While PyGC-MS is a much-used tool for the analysis of rubber compounds (both for the characterisation of the polymer and additives), as shown in Section 2.2, its usefulness for the in situ in-polymer additive analysis is equally acknowledged. [Pg.46]
