Shipment Methods and Packaging. Pyridine (1) and pyridine compounds can be shipped in bulk containers such as tank cars, rail cars, and super-sacks, or in smaller containers like fiber or steel dmms. The appropriate U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) requirements for labeling are given in Table 4. Certain temperature-sensitive pyridines, such as 2-vinylpyridine (23) and 4-vinylpyridine are shipped cold (<—10°C) to inhibit polymerisation. Piperidine (18) and certain piperidine salts are regulated within the United States by the Dmg Enforcement Agency (DEA) (77). Pyridines subject to facile oxidation, like those containing aldehyde and carbinol functionaUty, can be shipped under an inert atmosphere. [Pg.333]

Like mthenium, amines coordinated to osmium in higher oxidation states such as Os(IV) ate readily deprotonated, as in [Os(en) (NHCH2CH2NH2)] [111614-75-6], This complex is subject to oxidative dehydrogenation to form an imine complex (105). An unusual Os(IV) hydride, [OsH2(en)2] [57345-94-5] has been isolated and characterized. The complexes of aromatic heterocycHc amines such as pyridine, bipytidine, phenanthroline, and terpyridine ate similar to those of mthenium. Examples include [Os(bipy )3 [23648-06-8], [Os(bipy)2acac] [47691-08-7],... [Pg.178]

Acrolein (CH2=CHCHO) can be substituted for formaldehyde and acetaldehyde in the above reaction to give similar results, but the proportion of (3) is higher than when acetaldehyde and formaldehyde are fed separately. Acrolein may be formed as one of the first steps to pyridine (1) and P-picoline (3) formation. There are many variations on the vapor-phase synthesis of pyridine itself. These variations are the subject of many patents in the field. [Pg.332]

The toughness of interfaces between immiscible amorphous polymers without any coupling agent has been the subject of a number of recent studies [15-18]. The width of a polymer/polymer interface is known to be controlled by the Flory-Huggins interaction parameter x between the two polymers. The value of x between a random copolymer and a homopolymer can be adjusted by changing the copolymer composition, so the main experimental protocol has been to measure the interface toughness between a copolymer and a homopolymer as a function of copolymer composition. In addition, the interface width has been measured by neutron reflection. Four different experimental systems have been used, all containing styrene. Schnell et al. studied PS joined to random copolymers of styrene with bromostyrene and styrene with paramethyl styrene [17,18]. Benkoski et al. joined polystyrene to a random copolymer of styrene with vinyl pyridine (PS/PS-r-PVP) [16], whilst Brown joined PMMA to a random copolymer of styrene with methacrylate (PMMA/PS-r-PMMA) [15]. The results of the latter study are shown in Fig. 9. [Pg.233]

The raw material has to be washed to remove impurities. Diluted sodium hydroxide allows the removal of phenols and benzonitrile, and diluted sulphuric acid reacts with pyridine bases. The resulting material is distilled to concentrate the unsaturated compounds (raw feedstock for coumarone-indene resin production), and separate and recover interesting non-polymerizable compounds (naphthalene, benzene, toluene, xylenes). Once the unsaturated compounds are distilled, they are treated with small amounts of sulphuric acid to improve their colour activated carbons or clays can be also used. The resulting material is subjected to polymerization. It is important to avoid long storage time of the feedstock because oxidation processes can easily occur, affecting the polymerization reaction and the colour of the coumarone-indene resins. [Pg.604]

Selective fluonnation in polar solvents has proved commercially successful in the synthesis of 5 fluorouracil and its pyrimidine relatives, an extensive subject that will be discussed in another section Selective fluonnation of enolates [47], enols [48], and silyl enol ethers [49] resulted in preparation of a/phn-fluoro ketones, fieto-diketones, heta-ketoesters, and aldehydes The reactions of fluorine with these functionalities is most probably an addition to the ene followed by elimination of fluonde ion or hydrogen fluoride rather than a simple substitution In a similar vein, selective fluonnation of pyridmes to give 2-fluoropyridines was shown to proceed through pyridine difluondes [50]... [Pg.109]

Acyl transfer from an acid anhydride to an alcohol is a standard method for the preparation of esters. The reaction is subject to catalysis by either acids (H2SO4) or bases (pyridine). [Pg.847]

The importance of the solvent, in many cases an excess of the quatemizing reagent, in the formation of heterocyclic salts was recognized early. The function of dielectric constants and other more detailed influences on quatemization are dealt with in Section VI, but a consideration of the subject from a preparative standpoint is presented here. Methanol and ethanol are used frequently as solvents, and acetone, chloroform, acetonitrile, nitrobenzene, and dimethyl-formamide have been used successfully. The last two solvents were among those considered by Coleman and Fuoss in their search for a suitable solvent for kinetic experiments both solvents gave rise to side reactions when used for the reaction of pyridine with i-butyl bromide. Their observation with nitrobenzene is unexpected, and no other workers have reported difficulties. However, tetramethylene sulfone, 2,4-dimethylsulfolane, ethylene and propylene carbonates, and salicylaldehyde were satisfactory, giving relatively rapid reactions and clean products. Ethylene dichloride, used quite frequently for Friedel-Crafts reactions, would be expected to be a useful solvent but has only recently been used for quatemization reactions. ... [Pg.10]

CT+-values may not differ too widely from ct-values. Since the charges in 2 and 4 actually reside in the ring, the pyridine system may, in addition, be particularly subject to the variability of cr-values, and consequently a careful analysis of some rather extensive material in the sense of some of the most refined methods might be very profitable... [Pg.217]

Dihydropyridines not only are intermediates for the synthesis of pyridines, but also are themselves an important class of N-heterocycles an example is the coenzyme NADH. Studies on the function of NADH led to increased interest in the synthesis of dihydropyridines as model compounds. Aryl-substituted dihy-dropyridines have been shown to be physiologically active as calcium antagonists. Some derivatives have found application in the therapy of high blood pressure and angina pectoris. For that reason the synthesis of 1,4-dihydropyridines has been the subject of intensive research and industrial use. The Hantzsch synthesis has thus become an important reaction. [Pg.153]

One of the first indications that the antiinflammatory potency of the corticoids could be increased was the observation that incorporation of a 9a-fluoro group in hydrocortisone resulted in a tenfold increase in activity. Treatment of hydrocortisone acetate (170a) with phosphorus oxychloride in pyridine yields the corresponding olefin, 172. This, on being subjected to the reaction sequence depicted in the transformation of 104 to 108 (addition of HOBr, closure to the epoxide and ring opening with HF),... [Pg.191]

The monotosylation of 2,5-dihydroxybenzenesulfonicacid iscarried out in a pyridine medium by treating it with tosyl chloride, thus preferably isolating the 2-hydroxy-5-tosyloxybenzene-sulfonic acid, pyridine salt. This product subjected to reflux with an alcoholic solution of piperazine yields 2-hydroxy-5-tosyloxybenzenesulfonic acid, piperazine salt. [Pg.1434]

In extending this direct method of synthesis, we next investigated the possibility of preparing similarly constituted halides from 2-deoxy-D-arabino-hexose (2-deoxy-D-glucose) (21). The hexose was subjected to a partial anomerization procedure described by Bergmann and co-workers (1). The solid material obtained by this procedure is a mixture of the anomeric forms of 2-deoxy-D-arabino-hexose low temperature p-nitro-benzoylation of the latter in pyridine resulted in a mixture of crystalline, anomeric tetrakis-p-nitrobenzoates in a ratio of approximately 1 1. They were readily separable by fractional recrystallization, and treatment of either with an excess of hydrogen bromide in dichloromethane, or with... [Pg.11]

A second reaction which is very often used for the preparation of phthalonitriles, although the yields are usually not reproducible, is the Rosenmund-von Braun reaction (see Houben-Weyl, Vol. E5, p 1460).106 107 Herein, a benzene derivative with a 1,2-dibromidc or 1,2-dich-loride unit is treated with copper(I) cyanide in dimethylformamidc or pyridine. During this reaction the formation of the respective copper phthalocyanine often occurs. This can be used as an easy procedure for the exclusive synthesis of copper phthalocyanines (see Section 2.1.1.7.),1 os-109 but can also lead to problems if the phthalonitrile is required as the product. For example, if l,2-dibromo-4-trifluoromethyl-benzene is subjected to a Rosenmund-von Braun reaction no 4-trifluoromethylphthalonitrile but only copper tetra(tri-fluoromethyljphthalocyanine is isolated.110... [Pg.725]

Under N2, 6-chlorobcnzo[/]isoindolincdiiminc (5.04g, 21.9 mmol) was added to a refluxing mixture of SiCl (3.7 g, 2.5 mL, 22 mmol) and anhyd quinoline (40 mL) over 50 min. The resulting mixture was refluxed for 1.5 h, cooled, diluted with EtOH (75 mL), and the suspension was filtered. After the residue had been washed (MeOH), it was subjected to extraction (Soxhlet, pyridine) and then vacuum dried (90 C) to afford a blue-green solid yield 4.66 g (90%). [Pg.779]

The cycloadducts formed from the Diels-Alder reaction of 3-amino-5-chloro-2(17/)-pyrazinones with methyl acrylate in toluene are subject to two alternative modes of ring transformation yielding either methyl 6-cyano-l,2-dihydro-2-oxo-4-pyridinecarboxylates or the corresponding 3-amino-6-cyano-l,2,5,6-tetrahydro-2-oxo-4-pyridinecarboxylates. From the latter compounds, 3-amino-2-pyridones can be generated through subsequent loss of HCN <96 JOC(61)304>. Synthesis of 3-spirocyclopropane-4-pyridone and furo[2,3-c]pyridine derivatives can be achieved by the thermal rearrangement of nitrone and nitrile oxide cycloadducts of bicyclopropylidene <96JCX (61)1665>. [Pg.224]

An observation that the oxidation is subject to marked catalysis by pyridine was later refuted i °. ... [Pg.302]
