S ample Analysis. The fohowing procedure is used for sample analysis (/) after sample connections are made and the sample tubing purged for 30 minutes, the tubing is connected to the sampling manifold which serves to distribute sample gas to each of the analy2ers, and should analy2ers have specific pressure... 

The cell head is fabricated from a 2.54-cm steel plate and has separate compartments for fluorine and hydrogen. The oudet-gas manifolds, hydrogen fluoride feed and purge lines, and electrical connections are on top of the head. The gas separation skirt is made of Monel. An insulating gasket maintains the seal between the tank and the head. The anode assembly consists of 32 carbon blades bolted onto a copper bar, each of which contains three copper conductor posts. The cathode assembly consists of three vertical, 0.6-cm parallel steep plates. The plates surround the anode assembly and are supported by three steel posts which also serve as conductors. 

Inasmuch as the gas hydroly2es readily, all equipment should be purged repeatedly using inert dry gas before admitting boron trifluoride. Under anhydrous conditions, carbon steel equipment is satisfactory. Stainless steel and aluminum siUcon bron2e may also be used. Stainless steel tubing is recommended for both temporary and permanent connections.

Of the instmments described only some are suitable for use outside the laboratory. Where any instrument is carried into a flammable environment it should either be certified as intrinsically safe for exposure to the flammable atmosphere or isolated from the atmosphere such as by keeping it within a purged enclosure. Any probe connected to the instmment must be separately considered as a possible ignition source. Electrometers are described in [ 1531. A more general review of electrostatic instruments is given in [ 136]. 

Beyond the complexities of the dispersive element, the equipment requirements of infrared instrumentation are quite simple. The optical path is normally under a purge of dry nitrogen at atmospheric pressure thus, no complicated vacuum pumps, chambers, or seals are needed. The infrared light source can be cooled by water. Flashback protection is required for H2S flaring systems, either by water seal or continuous gas purge. If a water seal is used, special requirements apply to the disposal of the effluent seal water. In the case of an HjS flaring system handling a flow of HjS which in uninterrupted throughout the period that a plant is in operation, and which stops only when the producing plant is shutdown, then flashback protection is not required. However, steam or inert gas connections are required to permit purging the flare line startup and shutdown. 

Gas storage cabinets are designed to contain one to four gas cylinders. The cylinders are connected to a gas distribution system which is also contained in the cabinet. Very sophisticated systems are available from cabinet manufacturers. These may include automatic or semiautomatic change-over capabilities, fire sprinklers, purging systems, and gas detection systems which may include alarms and automatic shutoff. Point-of-use scrubbers may also be incorporated into the design, depending on the gas being used (see Fig. 10.43).
