Within the SCM field, there are many communities. These include the purchasing community, the warehouse and transportation community, the manufacturing community, the product development, and the information technology community. We attempt to address all these in terms of the impact on what they do day to day from changes in SCM practice. 

Finally, the laboratory expends significant effort communicating results to both internal and external customers. Production, quaUty assurance, and purchasing all have various information needs ranging from the simple pass /fail decisions to statistical summaries of the data and suppHer product quahty. Customers expect to receive lot analyses in the form of a COA and often also want their own product-specific information on the document as well. This information can automatically be appHed to the COA if entered into the LIMS. Often, a quaUty-conscious customer wants information about the product in the form of process capabiUty or control charts. Using LIMS, these charts can be provided on demand. 

As a set of minimum standards, ISO 9000 addresses the business community. It was intended for purchasers as a means for them to obtain products and services of consistent quality from their suppliers. In place of purchaser-specified general quality management requirements, ISO 9000 became the common requirement and hence eliminated the need for such requirements. As a consequence, it provides suppliers that meet its requirements with a demonstrable capability that others may not possess and hence such capability becomes a persuasive marketing tool that will increase market share. ISO 9000 was also intended for application to all types of industry and therefore did not contain requirements for any specific industry sector or type of products or services. Partially due to the scope of misinterpretation and the degree to which particular industries have common supplier requirements, certain industry sectors perceived the need for harmonizing such requirements in a form that added to those requirements in ISO 9000.

As you review each of the tasks, you should also consider what other resources (other than time of staff) may be needed. For example, improvements to incident/near-miss reporting might require modem communications between facilities and headquarters or a particular training module could be purchased to address an identified gap. 

Study. Many of these supplies may be purchased at local supply stores or through research supply companies. Personal computers with Internet software, laptop notebooks, fax machines, and portable copiers should also be moved to the field laboratory to provide the field research staff with the most modem communication and office technology.

A scheme that was initiated by a Dutch organic importer, Eosta B V, deserves special mention. In its Nature More scheme, products are scored in terms of compliance with organic, health and environmental standards. This is done as an add-on to the organic certification process. By entering a code that is on the product label, the consumer can see how the product he or she purchased scores. It is a communication tool that links the farmers to the consumers. 

What has happened over the years has been an increasing trend in the industry to globalise. This means that the effect on a market at the other end of the world can have an impact on a domestic market. There are several reasons for this improved communications, multinational purchasing of caustic, more transparency, and, according to one producer, too many consultants.
