The purchaser will specify the characteristics of the barrier or buffer fluid. Where the required flow, pressure, and temperature are factors, they shall be jointly established by the vendor and the seal manufacturer and shall be noted on the data sheets. When dual seals (as in Items b and c above) are provided, the barrier or buffer fluid shall be circulated by means of a circulating device such as a pumping ring or a flow-through system from an external source (see Appendix D). 

RECIRCULATION IS FROM A PUMPING RING IN THE SEAL CHAMBER THROUGH A COOLER AND BACK TO THE SEAL CHAMBER. THIS PLAN CAN BE USED ON HOT APPUCATIONS TO MINIMIZE HUT LOAD ON THE COOLER BY COOLING ONLY THE SMALL AMOUNT OF UQUID THAT IS RECIRCULATED. ( DIAL THERMOMETER IS OPTIONAL)...

Recirculation from seal with pumping ring through cooler and back to seal. 

Pressurized external barrier fluid reservoir supplying clean fluid to the seal chamber. Circulation is by an internal pumping ring. Reservoir pressure is greater than the process pressure being sealed. 

External piping provides fluid for the outer seal of a pressurized dual seal arrangement. Prepressurized bladder accumulator provides pressure to the circulation system. Pumping Ring— Helps circulate the outer seal flush liquid. 

The fluid that circulates between the two sets of seal faces is an environmentally safe liquid such as glycol, which is called the buffer fluid. It s circulated by the pumping ring. The reservoir may have a nitrogen makeup pressure control, cooling coil, and back-pressure control switch. I haven t shown these details. - The main purpose of the double mechanical seal is to alert the operator that the inner seal has failed. 

As a non-chemical example of the DIFICI we consider now the continuously pumped ring laser with an intra-cavity saturable absorber. Such a laser is known [5] to issue ultrashort pulses due to what is known in the laser literature as the multimode instability.
