Public education and outreach

This act authorizes the USEPA to issue annual grants to assist states in implementing their USEPA-approved nonpoint source management programs. The funds are used by states for public education and outreach, technical assistance, and specific project support to prevent or reduce nonpoint source pollution at the watershed level. The funding for these grant funds was approximately 237 million for fiscal year 2004. [Pg.505]

Publicity and public awareness of the program has been generated through a number of means, and is increasing. To make the program work and develop the levels of NiCd battery recycling desired, widespread public education and outreach is required. This has been provided by a number of approaches including ... [Pg.111]

The Administrator, in conjunction with the Secretary of Health and Human Services, acting through the Director of the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, and in conjunction with the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, shall sponsor public education and outreach activities to increase public awareness of-... [Pg.956]

The Network will address both short- and long-term societal implications of nanotechnology, as well as public engagement. AU 15 Nanoscale Science and Engineering Centers (NSECs) sponsored by NSF have strong education and outreach activities. [Pg.273]

Those studies conducted to date establish a basis for control of lead, pesticides, PAHs, PCBs, and allergens in indoor air and house dust. Track-in and accumulation of pollutants in rugs is an important source of exposure for children lead in dust is the major source of lead for most toddlers. The established benefits from reduced exposure to lead and allergens justify public education to reduce dust from track-in and inside sources as well as pollutants in indoor air. Action to control lead and allergens will reduce exposure to other pollutants in house dust and indoor air. It is possible that a nonregulatory education and outreach program with emphasis on public participation and pollution prevention will be more effective in the home than use of regulations and other traditional methods of pollution control. [Pg.71]

In order to gain rapid progress toward these intriguing goals, the level of government and private funding in the nanosciences continues to soar. This has spawned a number of institutes in recent years, focused on research, development, and commercialization of nanoscale discoveries, as well as public education/outreach. Some recent examples are ... [Pg.275]

The XMM-Newton Education and Public Outreach internet resource is another place educators can obtain materials about nucleosynthesis and related x-ray spectroscopy 12). [Pg.357]

Cool Cosmos, the Education and Public Outreach section of the Spitzer Space Telescope mission has a section on Multiwavelength Astronomy, where appropriate links are collected and updated. There are activities for students of all levels, K-12 and undergraduates 13). [Pg.357]

The Education and Public Outreach section of the Spitzer Space Telescope mission is known as Cool Cosmos 13). It has a wealth of information and links for teachers including details on reproducing how Sir Frederick William Herschel discovered IR radiation, now known as The Herschel Experiment. This is an experiment for younger students, perhaps up to middle school. [Pg.359]

Conducted 25 public outreach events to increase awareness among media, stakeholder groups, educators, and the general public - together, these events directly reached more than 176,000 people. [Pg.558]

The relationship of public involvement to continued funding is particularly important for public sector hatcheries, most of which often understand the importance of education and include outreach in their scheduled activities. However, private sector hatcheries can also find that their participation in educational projects yields beneficial publicity and gains support for their industry by diffusing the knowledge about their operations and the resulting products. This can help them find investors as their business or overall industry expands and can provide a continuing source of new employees from the students who participate in projects or programs. [Pg.619]

Hands-on nanotechnology content materials based on semiconductor quantum dot nanociystals were developed for use in a broad range of educational settings including undergraduate major and non-major chemistry courses, an upper level undergraduate chemistry laboratory course and outreach activities for K-12 and general public audiences. The focus is the colorful trend exhibited by cadmium selenide (CdSe) and cadmium selenide sulfide (CdSCxSi.x) quantum dots, which is correlated with the physical size of nanosized quantum dots. This visual trend illustrates one of the central themes in nanoscience that physical properties often depend on size at the nanoscale. [Pg.87]

The modified formulas, called butyl nitrite and isobutyl nitrite, did not require FDA approval because they were not marketed as either a drug or food product. They were marketed heavily in the gay community under the general name of poppers. By 1974, poppers were in full swing within the gay community, and large advertising campaigns were mounted in gay publications, according to Randy Viele, outreach coordinator for Project H.O.P.E. (HIV Outreach Prevention Education) in northeast New York. [Pg.43]

To support its public outreach and education mission, NASA maintains the online Space Science Education Resource Directory to provide assistance in locating resources for topics relevant to teaching goals 14). [Pg.357]
