The quest for nanostructures and devices based on the biomimetic premise of architectural and functional precision is intense and remains an ultimate challenge. One must ask - what new options or unique properties does the dendritic state offer to meet the needs of nanoscale science and technology The rest of this chapter will attempt to overview key features of the dendritic state that address these and other issues.

Lastly, in recognition of the growing importance of nanoscale science as an interdisciplinary field with contributions from all the areas of chemistry, and other disciplines the Examinations Institute has begun the process of writing questions developed around nanoscale science concepts, experiments, and methods. We expect that these questions will be additional items which instructors can choose to incorporate into their examinations if those materials are discussed in their courses. These questions are still under development with the committee preparing for publication in 2007.

Another major center of research on carbon nanotubes has been the Center for Nanoscale Science and Technology at Rice University. The center s director from 1997 to his death in 2005 was Richard Smalley, who was awarded a share of the 1997 Nobel Prize in chemistry for his part in the discovery of a new allotrope of carbon. The discovery, a 60-atom soccer hall-shaped particle originally named buckminsterfullerene, is more commonly known as a buckyball. The structure of a buckyball is shown in the photograph on page 91.
