Outreach programs

At each of our facilities we have established a community outreach program. Through this we try to learn about any concerns our neighbors have about our performance.

We at Sandia have always had educational outreach programs. Until several years ago, these programs were relatively small. Then Admiral Watkins issued a Department of Energy (DOE) directive We must expand our involvement in science education to inspire the youth of America to either enter, or feel more comfortable in, the fields of math, science, and engineering. With our labs and facilities, we are uniquely well positioned to provide major assistance in strengthening science and engineering motivation and education, making it come alive for the main body of students who too often fear these disciplines or who cannot relate to them. The third component to many tenure and promotion decisions is often referred to as service . This has many definitions and is generally split into service for the college and service to the outside community. Green chemistry is being utilized as a way for chemists to reach out to the community in a positive way and to involve students in service learning type projects. Expansion of green chemistry into the K-12 curriculum has been fostered by outreach programs developed by many people. 

Nearly fifty percent of respondents to the previously mentioned questionnaire indicated that they utilize green chemistry in outreach programs. The type of outreach that is being accomplished is as varied as the faculty members who are doing it. Some examples are discussed below. 

With a decreased need for pharmacists to identify obvious problems associated with pharmaceutical therapy, the pharmacist should be free to concentrate on patient-centered therapy issues. Pharmacists can spend more time with patients identifying barriers that might prevent a patient reaching an optimal outcome. Pharmacists can then address these issues with education and proactive adjustments in the patient s therapy. The pharmacist can concentrate more time on educating patients to better monitor their therapy to increase the likelihood of maximal therapeutic benefit without troublesome misadventures. Furthermore, the pharmacist could concentrate on therapeutic outreach programs such as brown bag clinics, diabetic care clinics, and asthma screening. 

The need for outreach programs clearly exists. Solely by word of mouth, the number of schools requesting to participate has ballooned. To date, no school has... 

S1A SFU is a science outreach program that has the opportunity to impact groups of students who would not ordinarily come into contact with a scientist in their daily lives. By engaging these students through a Science Inunersion Day, the S1A SFU program strives to stimulate their interest in the sciences, encourage them to take science courses and possible pursue careers in this field.
