PTFE/Dyneon

Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is a fully fluorinated polymer, which was discovered by chance in 1938 by Roy Plunkett. Later, the polymerization process was initiated at high pressure with peroxide. In 1941, DuPont received the patent on PTFE, therefore it is often denoted colloquially by Teflon , the original trade name of DuPont PTFE (ref DuPont). Other examples of PTFE trade names used by manufacturers are PTFE Dyneon , formerly ffostaflon (ret Dyneon), and Gore-Tex (ret Gore). [Pg.57]

For areas with special application requirements, specifically modified polyester fabrics, as well as fabrics from aramid fibres, fluorine polymers and arylamides like Kevlar (ref. DuPont), have proved to be satisfactory. The membranes show different characteristics depending on the coatings used. Fluorine polymers such as PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) are used on PES fabrics (refs Mehler and Ferrari) a PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) coating is very suitable for fibreglass fabrics (ref Verseidag) and there is a newly developed composite membrane with THV (ret Dyneon), a polymeric blend of tetrafluoroethylene, hexafluoropropylene and vinylidenefluorine, used as a coating on PES fabrics, of which VALMEX vivax (ret Mehler) is one example. [Pg.59]

PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) in micropow-der form imparts the lowest COF of any internal lubricant. Manufacmrers and suppliers are many and include DuPont Zonyl , and 3M Dyneon . [Pg.13]

PTFE is called a homopolymer, a polymer made from a single monomer. Recently, many PTFE manufacturers have added minute amounts of other monomers to their PTFE polymerizations to produce alternate grades of PTFE designed for specific applications. Fluoropolymer manufacturers continue to call these grades modified homopolymer at below 1% by weight of comonomer. DuPont grades of this type are called Teflon NXT resins. Dyneon TFM modified PTFE incorporates less than 1% of a comonomer perfluoropropyl vinyl eflier (PPVE). Daikin s modified grade is Polyflon M-111. [Pg.399]

Dyneon, a wholly owned subsidiary of 3M set up in 1996, is one of the world s leading fluoropolymer producers with operations or representation in more than 50 countries. Fluoropolymers have excellent heat, chemical and corrosion resistance. The most common is polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), often known by the Dupont trademark, Teflon . Other tradenames include Dyneon (3M) and Fluon (Asahi Glass). The invention of PTFE is often used as an example of serendipity, but it was actually a combination of serendipity, curiosity, and hard work. Roy Plunkett was working on experimental refrigerants when a cylinder that had been filled withtetrafluoroethylene (TFE) gas did not deliver gas when the valve was opened. Often, when something does not occur as planned, people discard the results and move on, but Plunkett was curious. When the cylinder was cut open, a white lubricious solid was discovered. Further investigation revealed the solid to be a polymer of tetrafluoroethylene [28]. [Pg.126]

Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is a crystalline translucent solid polymer with a high molecular weight ranging between 10 and 10 g mol. It is prepared from the monomer C2F4 by polymerization in aqueous medium and is obtained as fine powder. A number of trade names exist for PTFE. Thus it is often referred to as Teflon (DuPont), Hostaflon (Dyneon), Fluon (ICI), Hahn (AUied Chemical) or Fluoroplast (Ftoroplastoviye Tekhnohgii JSC) [1, 2]. [Pg.20]
