In Table 1.3 I have included the areas of physical and psychological health, which often do not feature in reviews. Methadone has significant adverse effects, as discussed below, and by no means do all patients report subjective improvements in health on the drug, as opposed to when taking street heroin or other opiates. However, if methadone treatment is adhered to, there is normalization of various circadian rhythms and endocrine effects... [Pg.22]

The precise incidence of alcoholism in the elderly remains unknown, but retired and recently widowed men seem to be at higher risk ( 392). Physicians and family members often overlook the effects of alcohol on an elderly person s physical and psychological health and may mistake this problem for an organic mental disorder. [Pg.295]

Based on Henderson et al. s work, an abbreviated version of the ISSI has been developed by Unden and Orth-Gomer (1989) which contains two dimensions availability of social integration (AVSI) and availability of attachment (AVA). The AVSI measures superficial relationships and support. It simply focuses on the quantity or number of relationships which would be a weak predictor of future psychological health. However, the AVA measures the availability of deep relationships with close friends, family members and spouses who could provide emotional support. The AVA purports to be a good predictor of resistance to psychological stress. [Pg.48]

A concern about the above correlates is that they do not imply causation. Because covaries with other purported causal determinants of social outcomes, for example SES, the causal antecedents of its correlates are equivocal. In Terman s (1925— 1959) famous longitudinal study of intellectually gifted participants, for example, subjects were appreciably above the norm on several educational and vocational criteria. On various indices of physical and psychological health, they were also significantly better off than normative base rate expectations would lead one to... [Pg.19]

The mind and the physical body are very much interrelated. Psychologically stressful situations have been shown to lead to physical ailments, and physical illness can greatly affect psychological health. It is known that rest and meditation lead to healthier lives, that people who believe they are healthy usually are healthy, and that people who want to recover from an illness or accident usually do better than people who are discouraged. [Pg.466]
