Property Characterization

Chemical characterization of the UHMWPE powder is typically performed at the powder-manufacturing site as part of their quality control protocol. However, researchers may want to periodically verify the purity and composition of the powder. ASTM 648 outlines several tests that can be used to analyze the powder. With regards to chemical characterization, trace element analysis and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) are the two common approaches. [Pg.274]

After consolidation of the polyethylene powder into solid stock, few if any chemical changes should have occurred. Degradation, or chain scission, caused by heat or mechanical deformation may sometimes appear after consolidation in isolated cases. FTIR can be used to see if bulk degradation has occurred in the sample. [Pg.274]

To look for evidence of degradation, researchers will usually examine the terminal vinyl group at 910 cm or a double bond at the end of a polymer chain, as shown in the following equation. [Pg.275]

The presence of a terminal vinyl group usually means that the polymer chain has broken, which will leave behind a vinyl group on each end. [Pg.275]

Oxidation can also sometimes occur, which leads to carbonyl formation. Carbonyls, which include ketones, esters, and ethers, have a principle absorption peak of approximately 1700 cm T ASTM F2102 describes the technique to [Pg.275]

Laminar flame speed is one of the fundamental properties characterizing the global combustion rate of a fuel/ oxidizer mixture. Therefore, it frequently serves as the reference quantity in the study of the phenomena involving premixed flames, such as flammability limits, flame stabilization, blowoff, blowout, extinction, and turbulent combustion. Furthermore, it contains the information on the reaction mechanism in the high-temperature regime, in the presence of diffusive transport. Hence, at the global level, laminar flame-speed data have been widely used to validate a proposed chemical reaction mechanism. [Pg.44]

Because the goal of hit triage is to identify chemical series that hold promise for further optimization, an approach to characterize the ADME properties of a series, not just individual compounds is often useful. Where possible, characterizing the structure-ADME property relationship, in much the same way that a structure-potency relationship is defined, can be valuable for assessing the probability that a given structural series can be successfully optimized. The goals of this ADME property characterization are twofold (1) to identify specific structural features that may be liabilities (benefits), and (2) to identify general structure-ADME property correlations. [Pg.153]

Classical bacterial exotoxins, such as diphtheria toxin, cholera toxin, clostridial neurotoxins, and the anthrax toxins are enzymes that modify their substrates within the cytosol of mammalian cells. To reach the cytosol, these toxins must first bind to different cell-surface receptors and become subsequently internalized by the cells. To this end, many bacterial exotoxins contain two functionally different domains. The binding (B-) domain binds to a cellular receptor and mediates uptake of the enzymatically active (A-) domain into the cytosol, where the A-domain modifies its specific substrate (see Figure 1). Thus, three important properties characterize the mode of action for any AB-type toxin selectivity, specificity, and potency. Because of their selectivity toward certain cell types and their specificity for cellular substrate molecules, most of the individual exotoxins are associated with a distinct disease. Because of their enzymatic nature, placement of very few A-domain molecules in the cytosol will normally cause a cytopathic effect. Therefore, bacterial AB-type exotoxins which include the potent neurotoxins from Clostridium tetani and C. botulinum are the most toxic substances known today. However, the individual AB-type toxins can greatly vary in terms of subunit composition and enzyme activity (see Table 2). [Pg.151]

If the material has passed the first development hurdles of physical properties characterization, process selection, cost projection, etc., a further stage of refinement can be embarked upon. This normally would include the preparation of one or a few preferred polymers of the family, in reasonably stable form and under procedures designed to afford reasonably clean, nearly commercial product. Material will now become available in sufficient quantity and... [Pg.60]

The extensive series of known quadruply bound molybdenum dimers has also been the subject of detailed experimental investigations to unravel the electronic properties characterizing excited states in these Mo2+ derivatives. Consideration of the Mo2Xj spectra is presented first since the Mo2(02CR)4 compounds exhibit significantly different features in their electronic spectra. [Pg.258]
