Nanocomposites, characterization mechanical properties

This is a nonpolar rubber with very little unsamration. Nanoclays as well as nanotubes have been used to prepare nanocomposites of ethylene-propylene-diene monomer (EPDM) rubber. The work mostly covers the preparation and characterization of these nanocomposites. Different processing conditions, morphology, and mechanical properties have been smdied [61-64]. Acharya et al. [61] have prepared and characterized the EPDM-based organo-nanoclay composites by X-ray diffracto-gram (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy... 

Nanocomposite based on polyurethane (PU) is prepared using silica, clay, and Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxane (POSS). Preparation, characterization, mechanical and barrier properties, morphology, and effect of processing conditions have been reported on polyurethane-based nanocomposites [72,73].

Thermal and mechanical properties have been drastically improved by nanocomposites [12-33] dispersed with inorganic clays in a polymer matrix, which is characterized by nanometer lengthscale domains. These nanocomposite systems can be similarly examined by the methodology reported in this chapter. 

The mechanical properties of the nanocomposites strongly depend on their structure, orientation of the filler, phase separation, and processing conditions. Hence, there is a need for in situ nondestructive characterization technique to probe the internal stress in nanocomposite structures. The shortcomings of many conventional techniques such as low resolution, destructive measurements, complex modeling and applicability to only certain class of materials are overcome by using pRS owing to the sensitivity and nondestructive measurement for monitoring internal stress in various materials [59].

Botana et al. [50] have prepared polymer nanocomposites, based on a bacterial biodegradable thermoplastic polyester, PHB and two commercial montmorillonites [MMT], unmodified and modified by melt-blending technique at 165°C.
