It is not surprising that intramuscular injection of epinephrine into the vastus lateralis produces a prompt peak plasma epinephrine concentration, because of the large size and excellent vascularization of this muscle. Several approaches have been considered so far in order to tackle this problem where the Co prompt-peak interferes with the physical part of the positron lifetime spectrum [145-147]. Aside from the PLEPS technique, one acceptable solution seems to be a triple-coincidence method using a Na source [145,147]. In this case, three y rays - one with an energy of 1274keV and two with energies of 511 keV - accompany each event of positron annihilation, while only two y-rays result from the °Co decay. However, compared to conventional two-detector systems, the requirement for triple coincidence drastically reduces the rate of accumulation of positron lifetime spectra [145,148]. In comparison, PLEPS reduces the measuring time by a factor of 500 and also enables the estimation of the defect concentration. [Pg.113]

The poor efficiencies of coal-fired power plants in 1896 (2.6 percent on average compared with over forty percent one hundred years later) prompted W. W. Jacques to invent the high temperature (500°C to 600°C [900°F to 1100°F]) fuel cell, and then build a lOO-cell battery to produce electricity from coal combustion. The battery operated intermittently for six months, but with diminishing performance, the carbon dioxide generated and present in the air reacted with and consumed its molten potassium hydroxide electrolyte. In 1910, E. Bauer substituted molten salts (e.g., carbonates, silicates, and borates) and used molten silver as the oxygen electrode. Numerous molten salt batteiy systems have since evolved to handle peak loads in electric power plants, and for electric vehicle propulsion. Of particular note is the sodium and nickel chloride couple in a molten chloroalumi-nate salt electrolyte for electric vehicle propulsion. One special feature is the use of a semi-permeable aluminum oxide ceramic separator to prevent lithium ions from diffusing to the sodium electrode, but still allow the opposing flow of sodium ions. [Pg.235]

Juvenile dermatomyositis (JDM) is perhaps the most uniform, in terms of clinical and histopathological features, of the whole PM/DM disease complex. Presentation may be before 5 years of age with peak incidence between 8 and 12 years. The disease may remit and recur until well into young adult life. The skin lesions include a facial rash in butterfly distribution across nose and cheeks. Erythematous skin changes are seen over extensor surfaces of joints, especially knees, knuckles and elbows. Amylase enters the blood largely via the lymphatics. An increase in hydrostatic pressure in the pancreatic ducts leads to a fairly prompt rise in the amylase concentration of the blood. Neither an increase in volume flow of pancreatic juice nor stimulation of pancreatic enzyme production will cause an increase in senm enzyme concentration. Elevation of intraductal pressure is the important determinant. Stimulation of flow in the face of obstruction can, however, augment the entry of amylase into the blood, as can disruption of acinar cells and ducts. A functional pancreas must be present for the serum amylase to rise. Serum amylase determination is indicated in acute pancreatitis in patients with acute abdominal pain where the clinical findings are not typical of other diseases such as appendicitis, cholecystitis, peptic ulcer, vascular disease or intestinal obstruction. In acute pancreatitis, the serum amylase starts to rise within a few hours simultaneously with the onset of symptoms and remains elevated for 2 to 3 days after which it returns to normal. The peak level is reached within 24 hours. Absence of increase in serum amylase in first 24 hours after the onset of symptoms is evidence against a diagnosis of acute pancreatitis (76). [Pg.211]

The peak temperature decreases by up to 80 K between = 100 and 2 with increasing levels of partial premixing as shown in Fig. 27.5b. Therefore, the peak thermal contribution decreases and the integrated thermal contribution, as shown in Fig. 27.5a, does not increase rapidly. Beyond equivalence ratio of 2, the peak temperature increases rapidly and the thermal contribution follows.
